Thanks for the clock tip! Like it better than Jaguar's because it's less transparent and is better at hiding that *&#! "Macintosh HD" icon on my desktop!
Plus, it can be set to announce the time.
I'm trying to find out if the "Secure Erase" function (permanently removes files from hard drive) is automatic, or if it has to be set somewhere. Anyone got info on that?

Yes go to finder and then to the finders application menu on the top of the screen. Select preferences and then hide the hard disks.

Secure erase: Menu option each time you empty the trash. Finder -> Secure Empty Trash. You can use the Keyboard prefs to assign a shortcut key for it, too /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It took me 3 attemts t get panther running propperly, it was very frustrating, I very nearly went back to Jag, but 3rd time lucky
1st install, when it booted, the finder just flashed on and off, and I could not use it
2nd install Safari and mail refused to work
3rd insatll bing it works, and I have been running premier 6.5 and photoshop 7, and it is all good
I have to say I love the font book but it only hold 859 fonts, I have 3500, so it would be good, if it could hold more
But on the whole pretty impressed, but can not see much of a speed improvment, but it makes Jag look antiquanted

Nothing ground breaking but alot of cool new features. I backed up my "users" folders and reformatted my HD to zeros and then installed Panther fresh, logged in as root user and used a few Terminal tricks to transfer my old "users" folder on my G4 Cube. Everything came off without a hitch. Boot time is noticeable faster. The new Finder IMO, is much more practicle. Expose is very useful on my 15" LCD, and multi=user switching is fast & convenient even though my graphic card doesn't support the "turning cube" effect.
I did a have few tense moments though. On one boot my "sound" dissapeared and then when I tried to restart, my Cube hung at the Apple logo, minus the spinning icon beneath it. Booting from the Panther CD and running repair permissions seem to remedy the problem. I'm not sure if the sound problem is related to Panther or my speakers though. I previously had a Pre-Release version of Panther on a partition and I experienced intermittent "sound" issues with that too. I didn't give it much thought though because after all it was a Beta release version.
All in all, I have good first impressions of Panther. I've been on the OS X bandwagon every since Public Beta 3 years ago, so it wasn't going to take much for me to updgrade anyways.

Just tried the new clock and it's huge! And it floats over everything. I think I'll just stick with having it in my menu bar, although having the date show too was nice. I leave iCal open all the time, so it's easy enough to get the date when I need it. Or just click on the menu bar clock.

Feels the most mature of all X incarnations. Even after an upgrade install that left a few littel gremlins from jaguar it felt a lot quicker. Did a clean install last night thinking it would take hours but the actual install took under an hour. Took a while to restore various big libraries few apps etc. Otherwise no problems.
I really like Expose and look forward to creating a new user so I can 3D switch between users (just for the hell of it!). But for me it's not the bells and whistles just an OS that has a definite improved look & feel to it.
And after a clean install it's a LOT faster.
I know how intimidating the prospect of clean installing can be (I've only done it once before and it makes me really nervous) but if you allow yourself some time and just logically look at what you need to back up, make lists of what you have backed up and where they should be restored to - everything will be just fine and well worth it.

Did anyone notice that you can now tab through buttons in 'sheets?' It was always so freakin annoying that I couldn't toggle to the 'cancel' button, or any other button in Jaguar... you had to use the mouse to click it! Now if they will only add that to Safari!!!
I know it's a small thing, but dang, I'm glad they brought it back.
Two of my third party UI haxies don't work now... Window Shades and Fruit Menu. I reinsalled both, but neither work. Hopefully they'll have new versions out soon.
Other than that, everything seems to work fine! I LOVE Expose! It's definitely the best new feature to me!

You can tab through buttons? I have Panther, and if I close a Word document without saving, it prompts Don't Save, Cancel, and Save. Hitting tab does nothing, just like in Jaguar.

LOL. I find people not liking hard disk icons on the desktop really funny because the lack of this feature was one of the things people complained loudly about with the early versions of OS X (before the public beta).
