Looking around, the net I find other iPod like players. That claim to have up to twice the battery life of the iPod and iPod mini.
I have a 1G iPod and am happy with it and I know that the iPod is the best, looking, designed and have the best controls and UI.
I am just disappointed that Apple can't beat or be level with the other when it come to battery life. Does the iPod use a bad battery or is it just not very energy efficient?
Anyone able to answer this?

When comparing the iPod with these other hard-drive based players, look at the size and weight of the iPod compared with the size and weight of the others (like the Dell DJ for example).
Apple had to make some tradeoffs to get the iPod as small and light as it is. One of those tradeoffs was in the size of the battery. I guess they felt that a roughly 8 hour battery life was a worthy trade to make the new iPods even smaller than the originals.
They could match the competitors in battery life if they wanted to, but they would have to use a bigger battery and as such the iPod would be a bit more clunky and awkward to handle.

No... there are still no competing products with all the features of the iPod stuffed into such a small package. Something a 1/4" thicker could easily have a battery twice as big (and twice as heavy).
Apple built a product with an amazingly simple rechargable battery at a time when most companies were still using AA or AAA batteries. 8 hours was a very useful, reliable battery life and it is more than most would need.
