I usually burn cd's in audio format for my Mac store bought songs but the other day I decided I wanted to burn them in mp3 format yet the iTunes would tell me I couldn't do it. Is there something I can do to make these songs mp3 "friendly" or do I have to settle for audio cd's all the time?

You'd have to find some way to convert those files to normal MP3's. There's two techniques: burn to audio CD and then encode back into MP3 from that. Find a copy of Playfair and convert the resultant AAC file to MP3. Either way, you are going to suffer some quality degradation.
