This sounds so simple but I'm not figuring out the solution.
I want to print a copyright character. Do I:
a) use a symbol font? (I don't see the copyright symbol anywhere with various symbol fonts in fontbook)
b) use some sort of sequence of keystrokes?
Also what are XPress Tags? The Xpress help brought up info about Tags and I have no clue what they're talking about. Is this for web layouts or would I use this for including a copyright?

Thanks. My next question of course is how do you find these (and other things like it) out (aside from by accident?) The manual seems to be mostly unhelpful. I usually like to try and find these things out "on my own" especially when the question seems so simple and easy. Any tips on working my way through XPress? (Books, and the like?)

In OSX Keycaps has been replaced with Keyboard Viewer. Go to International preference Pane and select the Input Menu tab on the top. Then check off the Character Palette and Keyboard Viewer and select"Show input menu in menu bar" option on the bottom. You then will have access to all key combos.

XPress tags can be used for automatically formatting text. For example, a large text-intensive project such as a directory can have text imported with tagged data, so that instead of manually tagging each paragraph, it is done automatically. Usually, this is done by exporting style names, which are then inserted into database data (in applications such a FileMaker), then reimported. Quark reads these automatically, and the text is already set to predefined styles. Certainly makes tedious work run far more quickly...

Just one additional point about XPress Tags
As of Quark 4 (if this has changed in newer versions, please feel free to correct me), in order for tags to work properly, there must be both a Paragraph style sheet and a Character style sheet with the name that's included in your tag. It's really annoying to find that out after importing all the text.
XPress Tags are a lot more complicated than they used to be, but they're still a huge help when laying out long projects.

I followed your instructions and I already had "show input menu in menu bar" selected. I was not sure if you meant to select keyboard viewer and character palette so there would be check marks in the boxes or to do the reverse. (I assume you meant the former?) Anyway I have everything checked and I still don't see how this would help in finding out things like how option-g inputs a copyright symbol.
I just installed keycue which Dan Frakes reviewed in the August issue (p. 55) and although it might helpful for the menu shortcuts it wouldn't help me for things like how to type a special character like the copyright symbol.

with the "Keyboard Viewer" open, individually hold down the Shift, Control, Option, and Apple keys (one at a time). you should notice that your viritual keyboard's character palette displays the alternate characters (aka Glyphs), depending on what key you hold down. depending on the font, combinations of the afore mentioned keys will produce other glyphs.
also try opening "Show Character Palette," located in the same USA flag icon.

AHHHH! I'm slow lately. I also made the mistake thinking that typing this symbol would have something to do with XPress rather than the O.S. This is pretty cool and it works if you change the keyboard to something like Hebrew and I'm always forgetting they layout of Hebrew characters.
Also its mildy entertaining to see the keycaps that I'm typing on my virtual keyboard as I'm typing. Thanks a lot! Now I get it! (Now back to preparing food for Shabbos!)

If your using a Mac us Alt+G to get a copyright sybol, I think!
If your having trouble remembering those keystrokes, get hold of a copy of PopCharacter!

In the UK, it has been alt for a good long time.

As some one who has trained in the UK and always have called 'OPTION' alt, I am glad someone stood up for my way of thinking. Anyway, who cares about windows users? this is a Mac forum! Bill Gates can keep his nose out of Graphic Design!
