Microsoft Corp.'s Mac Business Unit (MacBU) on Wednesday released Microsoft AutoUpdate 1.1.1, an update to the update mechanism itself included with the company's Office 2004 for the Macintosh. Microsoft AutoUpdate 1.1.1 fixes a problem with the update download progress bar, which did not accurately display the progress of the download. more

The updater will update itself. Try running it.
You'll notice that the progress bar will not move, that's the bug that the updated version fixes. Ah, the irony.
What I find strange is they're updating their update mechanism. Here's to hoping an update to their application suite is coming soon.

It's called "Microsoft AutoUpdate" and should be located in your Applications folder. I typically do an install from the CD installer rather than a drag install, though it shouldn't make a difference.
To fix, simply go into your the Office folder in the "Microsoft Office 2004" folder. Copy the file "SAU.tar.gz" to your desktop and double click on it (I like to copy it just in case some strange gunzip program likes to delete the file after uncompressing). Put the uncompressed file (Microsoft AutoUpdate) in your Applications folder and update away.

In reply to:
I don't have this anywhere on my computer
The easiest way to access Microsoft AutoUpdate (including setting preferences for frequency of updating):I don't have this anywhere on my computer
In Entourage 2004, Word 2004, or Excel 2004 (I don't use PowerPoint, but guess it operates the same):
Under the Help pulldown menu, click on "Check on Updates."
Respectfully, Norm
