ok guys. i finally just got my brand new imac G5, and i love it. But because this is the first time using OSX, i have a few questions.
1) When I save a file in Word (<from the apps ive used so far), I can't save the file to a specific folder. I can only save in the list given. Is there a way i can save to a specific folder?
2)Can i change a song from my keyboard in iTunes without changing to that window?
3)Why don't delete keys work for deleting files?
stay tuned for more!

1) Of course you can. Click the little arrow button next to the pop-up. You'll now have the full dialog.
2) There are third party products that will do this. I personally like Synergy.
3) Design decision. Because deletion of files was so destructive, Apple decided to make a modifier key required. Hold command (apple) and press delete (backspace).

Actually Derik,
If I want to save a file in /Documents/History/History609/Lectures The nested folders will not be displayed. All that is displayed is Documents.
Best I have been able to accomplish is to save it to documents and then go to Documents and move it to the folder I want.
If there is a method of burrowing down through nested folders I would like to know also.

I made some screenshots. There are two modes after clicking the triangle button. One is the traditional Mac save dialog (first two pictures). You double click to tunnel down. The second is column mode (third picture). You just click on subfolders to tunnel down.
Please tell me you haven't been working around this by saving at root folder levels only and then filing the files.

I cant believe i didn't see that /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif . Thanks
But, for the change song in iTunes thing, I was talking about with the keyboard and without changing to the iTunes window. Anyway, i think it would require some programming or freeware. [Edit: i see now what you were saying. I'll try out synergy]
3) command+delete... got it /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
More Edit:
Can i decide not to see file extensions?

If any of the three views were what I saw I would not. However I do not see anything like what you are displaying when I create a new word document and go to file/save as.
I would give you a screenshot of what I am seeing except when the save dialog box is up and I go to /word/services/grab .....all options are grayed out.

Yes I sure have and once you see what I am talking about you can tell me another way of doing it.
How do I get a screenshot with grab grayed out?

There's two keystrokes to remember for screenshots:
Commandshift3 - Takes shot of whole screen.
Commandshift4 - Will let you drag selection over a portion of a screen. If you want to capture a specific window, press this, then hit the space bar with the pointer over the window. It will highlight the selection, then click.

Also, when you drag a file on top of a folder icon or disk icon and hold it there without letting go, the folder or disk will "spring open" and as long as you don't release the mouse button you can burrow down into more folders. When you finally let go, the file's dropped into the last folder you opened, and after the file is moved all the folders you open automatically close up so you can be back where you were without a mess of windows. Try it.
