When I made to change to 9.2.1 all worked well except on my Que Fire 924x-10x-40x) CD-RW fire wire burner...toast light 5.0.2 worked on the computer but would not recognize I have a burner. I called for support and he told me to set a new set of extensions and disable the following extensions: authoring support, disc burner extension, firewire authoring support, SDAP authoring support, USB authoring support...he also said I should disable itunes & ipod but there were not in the extensions....

When I created the new extensions, the burner and all else on the computer worked as in the past ....then when I went to shut down the computer later that night, it would not shut down....the control strip went away be the computer never shut down...this happens almost all the time since but sometimes it did not ...I tried to recreate it every time but could not.... I ran DiskWarrior and it found nothing and then did Norton system works 2.0 and it said the following:

So what I am thinking is I have two problems, 1. an extension one and the sound problem...do you agree????

Which of the extensions needs to be on that I turned off and still let my CD burner work?

I was told my sound file must be corrupted and if I trash it the computer will recreate it....if this is the fix and how do I do it?

I also have been told I need the new Firmware Update 4.2.8 for the cube (which I have on a CD)...Do I need to put it in the computer and will this fix the problems, if so how do I do it?

Firmware works like the updaters... just launch it and it will tell you what to do. It will tell you to locate some hard-to-notice button on your cube and press it in while restarting... or something to that effect. Just open the firmware update and it will give you instructions.

About your preferences... yes, you can trash those. However, I think the proper way to do this is what is referred to as "zapping the PRAM." You should also rebuild your desktop every once in a while. If Norton says to check your media, this may mean that your HD has some bad blocks. If you're still on warranty, call up Apple and ask them to help you figure out if the drive needs to be replaced. Also... you say this happened when you put 9.2.2 update on your computer. As far as I know, 9.2.2 was only recommended for people that were using OS X because it alledgedly improves classic performance. You have a G4 cube... so I would almost be inclined to tell you to update your firmware and then immediately purchase OS X 10.2 and just make that "switch" now. You can still run OS 9 apps in classic by installing OS 9.2.x and then putting OS X on top. But since your still fixing your computer, might as well go all out.

Oh... noticing you skipped some steps in the Norton tests... run Norton again and allow it to verify EVERYTHING. Make sure to start up off of the Norton disk so that it can make any and all changes that need to be made.

As to why your computer won't shut down... sounds like it's either freezing or in some other kind of infinite loop that keeps it from terminating. Start keeping track of all your open apps and what you're doing with those apps whenever you use your computer. That way, you can start figuring out what doesn't cause problems as well as what does.
