You have to have 9.1.

Don't know how well it works but it might be worth checking out ...

Instead of shelling out those dineros for Word ...

My G5 isn't OS 9 bootable, so I run it in Classic's emulation mode. I believe it's still basically 9.2.2 however. [Edit: I just looked, and yes it is 9.2.2]. I just started Word 98 up because I didn't recall whether I had tried it under 10.3.6. It booted in 4-5 seconds. I typed a test document and saved it. No problems and as fast as always.

This is very odd. The system versions I have are the same as yours. Whats even stranger is that the iMac I mentioned earlier that had 10.3 on it I just updated to 10.3.6, and now it has the exact same problem as the eMac when running Word 98 in Classic! These two computers must have something in common that your computer does not have. Both of these computers can boot into OS 9 completely, so I guess I could always do that. However, I have not tested Word when booted into OS 9 yet, but I am sure it will work. The only thing that I can think of is there must be some extension, that is common to both, that is mildly conflicting with the Classic support files. Any ideas? (Maybe I ought to post in the Classic OS forum as this discussion is going more into the world of Classic?)

Again the computer info for both that do not run Word 98 in Classic:
eMac 1Ghz G4
640MB of RAM
Combo drive
OS 10.3.6 and 9.2.2. I keep Classic running all the time.
iMac DV+ 450Mhz G3
192MB of RAM
DVD/CD drive
OS 10.3.6 and 9.2.2. Usually booted into OS 9.

Leave it here ... it did after all begin as a valid OS X query concerning the 3.6 update. Which made me recall something. You and I didn't do the same update. When I did them the other day I noticed that my wife's iMac's download was around 15 MB; mine for the G5 was closer to 35 MB. Obviously different animals. Perhaps the answer might lie in downloading the combo updater and trying to run that (if you haven't already).
[Edit: Well bummer. Just went back through the thread and you DID use the combo updater. So that's not it. Okay, have you run all the various MS updaters for Office 98?]

I have tested Word 98 on both of the computers while booted into OS 9 and it seems to be working fine in this arrangement. This points to the Classic emulation environment as the problem, so yes, I guess the discussion should stay here.
As for the Office updates, I have never run any of them. (In fact, I did not know that there were updates for Office 98!) This sounds like a good way to go. I assume that these updates can be found on the Microsoft site. My only concern here is that I do not have the entire Office 98 package, just Word. However, I will go ahead and see if I can find the updates and run them.

I finally got around to running the updates on Word 98. Unfortunately, this did not fix the problem. The exact version of the Word application after all of the updates is "8.0 (9925)". Is this the version you have? I am beginning to think that it may not be the program itself that is causing the problem. I tried starting Classic without the extensions. This only improved the performance a little, and after I restarted normally, the performance was indistinguishable from when the extensions were disabled.
What is strange is that over the time I have been using Word in Classic (after the OS X update), I have noticed that the good or bad performance is not consistent. Sometimes it will run OK and other times it will be almost unusable. However, when booted into OS 9 it always works fine.
To tell the truth, I am getting very tired of messing with this program! The bad performance could be following a pattern but I have not been observing it long enough to find it. I would not mind discontinuing this discussion for now so that I have some time to use it in this configuration and see if I can figure out what is going on.

Word 8.0 (8823), but I last updated it more than a year ago.
