I have a G4 desktop, and need to switch to G5 very, very soon! I can't afford the top-of-the-line one for sure. Any suggestions? I am digital photographer processing/working on large files. I remember reading G5 comparations in one of the MacWorld issues, can't find it now when I need it!
Thanks!

The Power Mac that will give you the best performance for its price would be the Dual 1.8-GHz Power Mac G5.
If you need every bit of speed that you can get and want more "future expansion" options, try the Dual 2-GHz G5. (Of course, with PCI Extreme picking up on the Wintel side of things, it might not actually matter than the Dual 2-GHz G5 has PCI-X.)
The single 1.8-GHz Power Mac G5 is just a bad idea. It is essentially a more-upgradeable version of an iMac G5.
I hope that this helps... /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(I suppose you "need" the tower)
Most people are waiting for a general overhaul of the tower line i.e. an upgrade ...so if you could, my personal best advice would be to wait just a little bit longer to see what is coming...

Thank you guys!
Any suggestion / links to how to safely and properly transfer all the files form my G4 to new G5? Or should I just connect them into a network, and keep the old files on old Mac and just install programs to my new Mac? (I don't think it's worth selling my G4)

firewire:

ethernet:

Or even a special USB cable, but try the above first

It's also worth noting that new G5's have the transfer utility that will automatically run the first time you boot it up (or can be run later if you prefer). Connect the old machine to the new machine via firewire, and you can transfer all your docs, accounts, and settings.

with the advent of the mini... probbly not worth selling.
the network idea is the easiest and most trouble free.
you can work from the G4 files while on the G5, or you can just drag them over as needed and do it that way. you already have a system of some sorts for your file/folders.. why change? start a similiar format on your new G5 and have fun.

Great!
I just heard from one of the dealers that for Photoshop work and imaging I would be doing the dual 1.8 is more than enough - the 2.0 and 2.5 are for video editing? Is this right? My files are up to 1.5 GB sometimes, although usually just around 200 MB.

my child is the graphic artist/student..
she doesn't do video, but between the G5 iMac which she does most of her stuff on and now this G5 1.8 dual.. she loves it.. personally, a 200M file in my folders is usually called an "Application"
get the 1.8 if money is too tight for the 2.0
also, you may consider the Apple Refurbs.. plenty of users around here bought em and have no problems.
remember.. alotta people doing video have been doing them on a G4.. and speed was the only problem.. so you may get a bit faster.. but it would probbly have to be a many gig file for a major imprevment in speed.
just my opinion.
