Oh yeah one more thing how do you add more RAM to these eMac's? it doesn't have any info on the apple site about it. Is it that hard? What about the hard drive? 40GB is nice for me for now but who knows in 3 years time images/icons/rolleyes.gif

You can find out how memory is installed in the eMac here.

No way to put in a new hard drive down the road images/icons/frown.gif

Does this thing run cool or hot? does it have a fan?

Macworld July 2002 issue, p.14 on.
I've had it for 2 weeks now. It's the best Mac I have had to date. Best value for what you get. I love the Combo drive!
Installing more RAM and Airport card was very easy. Had it up and running, surfing the web via Airport network in 15 minutes after taking it out of the box.
It does have a fan. No problem with sleep function at all though.
It's a beauty!

Thanks for that info, good to know it has a fan......but after a few hours say 3 hours is the thing hot on top? I keep thinking that becuase there are no vents at the top of the eMac to keep it cool....where does it get it's air from, and where does it come out of? too keep cool.

Just my 2 cents.

I had a chance to play around with a demo eMac for about half an hour last week - for a while I've been considering what Mac to get later this Summer. I was glad to get my hands on an eMac, finally.

I find the eMac much nicer in person than in internet pics - very attractive, a minimalist and sensible update to the classic iMac design. I think the eMac I tested had been on for hours already but it seemed hardly even warm.

Anyway, now that I've had my playtime, I'm VERY seriously considering getting myself an eMac - the 17" screen is gorgeous, the machine seemed fast enough for my needs, I can get a Combo Drive because I work at a university... and (drum roll) most importantly, the price is right.

Ditto, Doug! Go for it! I got mine with Combo Drive here in Vancouver, BC. You will not regret it!

Frank,

If you want to see how easy it is to put a new HD in the eMac check out this site:-

ftp://ftp.info.apple.com/AppleSupportArea/Misc/Service/servicemanuals/emac.pdf

It doesn't look anywhere near as easy as it was to upgrade my iMac 333 to 80GB unfortunately images/icons/frown.gif

As for the heat/ fan issue, I bought one yesterday & it has been on since then! I put it to sleep for the nite, very nice, the fan kicks off & you can't hear a thing! My old 233 imac could be very annoying at times when asleep! Anyway have been working with it all day today & it is barely warm! Will see when I get to some photoshop work later tho. It has vent in the back kind of a nose cone looking arraingment. 2 words; absolutely fantastic! & as for OSX, well, I thought I'd be a OS9 hold out for a while longer, but now ? I'm amazed.

I've only just seen my first eMac today - at the store I visited it had been on for about 3hrs and although it wasn't warm on top it was warm towards the bottom of the fan at the back (I'm not sure if this was to do with it being on an uderlit display which was giving off quite a bit of heat).

I was quite impressed with the quietness of the fan (compared to my iMac 333 it was virtually silent), but wasn't impressed with the display at high resolution. The store had it set at 1024x768 but turning it up to 1280x1024 (72Hz) the screen appeared to have a distinct wobble (certainly worse than my iMac at 1024x768, 75Hz) . In my mind the major advantage of the eMac (other than price) was the high res screen. I don't know if this is typical of all eMac's but if it is the case I'll be waiting for a 17" flat panel iMac to come out later in the year.

P.S. There also appeared to be a lot of wasted space around the edge of the screen (despite optimising screen geometry)

That's good info from you guys and thanks for it...but one last thing.....what about the sound? Do the speakers make good sound or are they weak......i have a AppleVision AV display and can't find anything yet from apple that has better speakers than this mac.....does the eMac speakers make good sound?

Also does it suck it's air in or blow it out of the eMac?

Is it good at quake 3? as i can't find a macworld review or any review of this mac anywhere on the net.....

I am pulling my hair as to what to do about this eMac...should i wait for Macworld New York to come? Would they update such a mac? Or should i buy now?

The sound quality is very good. However, you won't get much bass from such small speakers. Hardcore gamers will opt for add-on speaker systems. The emac blows air OUT from inside the chassy, thru the back of the unit. As for graphics performance. . .perhaps you should ask an iMac (new) user because the eMac uses the exact same graphics sub-system. This is my first Mac and have only had it for two days ; ). So I would be glad to help answer anymore questions as it well help me also to learn the eMac.
