Launched iTunes and saw the message "updating.." I quit this before it finished and now I've lost all of my playlists and half of my music library is gone as well. I dragged the iTunes music folder to the Library part of iTunes to re-update and it worked ok.
My problem is I still don't have my playlists. I've tried importing various files from the iTunes folder but no luck. Any suggestions?

Since you posted a question, it would be helpful if you shared how you fixed the problem for the benefit of us mere mortals.

iTunes: How to recreate your iTunes Library
Follow these steps:

Quit iTunes.

Locate your iTunes folder.

For Mac OS X the iTunes folder is stored in one of the following locations:

/Users/username/Music

/Users/username/Documents
Note: You may need to check both locations.

For Microsoft Windows the iTunes folder is stored in

Documents and SettingsusernameMy DocumentsMy Music

Open your iTunes folder.

Drag the iTunes Music Library.xml to the Desktop

Drag the following files from your iTunes folder to the Trash:

iTunes 4 Music Library

Any other iTunes Music Library files that are in your iTunes folder (for example, you may still have iTunes Music Library files from older versions of iTunes).
Open iTunes.

From the File menu, choose Import. Tip: Do not add any music into iTunes at this point.

Navigate to the iTunes Music Library.xml file on the Desktop.

Click Choose.
