In an interview with Marketwatch.com, Mike Weider, CTO of Watchfire, states that there are reported cases of hackers comprimising Mac systems with the help of Spyware.
Is this a true statement? Can anyone name these cases?

until i hear it from a source that doesn't profit from the "alleged" problem.. it's just someone scamming you to make a fast buck.

While it may be true some newbie PURPOSELY installed some questionable software that was some kind of keylogger, he/she had to do it to themselves; not spyware in the traditional (i.e. Windows) sense whereby the user didn't do anything more than hook up to the internet and become compromised just sitting there idle . . .

last night I could not sleep. At 3 am my hard drive started up and was making lots of noise like when you open a program . I went over to my computer(30" flat Imac) the power light that is usually slowly lighting and fading out while in the sleep mode was on and flashing rapidly. but my screen was still asleep. I checked on my router and it was going. I unplugged the router from the computer and the hard drive stopped. do you think there is spyware in my computer.

no

I think you should have looked to see what was running.

3 am sounds like a good time for the daily CRONS and whatnot to be running. along with your software update running thru it's lengthy process of seeing what versions you have vs current releases.

Let's not jump to conclusions here! I have yet to see a legit virus or spyware program for the Mac. On that note though, even with PCs, all the spyware I've ever seen requires some degree of user interventions--be it browsing shady websites, clicking OK on fake "You are infected" ads, etc.
