I ordered a new 12" PB with superdrive on monday, recieved it on Wednesday. I don't really know what I'm doing, since before now, my last use of a mac was 4 years ago. As far as I know, spotlight is supposed to instantly index files. I'm having problems getting it to find files. I've added info in the spotlight comments section of all of the pictures I added to my pictures folder, but it seems that it doesn't index things as I change or add them. I tried to reindex specific folders by adding and removing them under the privacy section of spotlight settings. That didn't work. Only after reindexing the entire hard drive did it find files I had added info to or added recently (that is also the only time it will tell me that it's reindexing the files, it did not do that when I tried with specific folders).
I tried to search for the folder "Aerosmith" which is in the music folder, but that was not found until after reindexing the hard drive. I changed the spotlight comments in some pictures after that hoping it would work normally, but it still acts as if there are no changes. It is set to search for all categories of files, it just doesn't index things as I make changes. What am I doing wrong or what do I need to change?

without having to index constantly, dunno what you can do.
as an old classic holdout (pre X) i still use <command>f to find stuff.
one day i may remember that little blue icon in the top right of my menu, but until i get used to it, i still use "Find" and it still works.
