I am new to this forum and am trying to understand Airport Express and would like to listen to Internet radio in my living room. Do I understand that:
iTunes running on my PC will stream music files
through my 802.11g router
to an Airport Express and to my stereo receiver?
and
is it possible to also listen to say NPR broadcasts over the Internet in the same way?

Airport Express can only stream station that can be played through iTunes. That means any MP3 radio stream, of which there are many, like the ones on Shoutcast . However, NPR, BBC, and others use Real Audio, not MP3, so they can't be played in iTunes, so they can't be streamed in Airport Express...directly. But...

You can get software that can take Real Audio, Windows Media, or other types of non-iTunes audio, and stream it through an Airport Express so that it will work. The software I have heard of that does this is AirFoil.

... but you can stream directly from many radio stations' websites, particularly public radio stations. Plenty of them DO provide MP3 links that play in iTunes and can be beamed to your Airport Express.
Another option is to record the stream using an audio app like RadioRecorder, which converts them to MP3 and saves them as a file in your iTunes library. Then you can play it back via AE whenever you want.

Yeah...that's what I already said when I wrote "That means any MP3 radio stream, of which there are many, like the ones on Shoutcast." Many traditional radio stations publish their MP3 streams there. You can search "npr" at Shoutcast and get a list of some NPR stations.

Thank you both most kindly for this very helpful info. I am most interested in being able to listen to streaming internet radio in real time, but it seems that AirFoil is only for Mac OS10, so does anyone know of a device that will stream NPR and other RealAudio broadcasts in Windoze?

ooTunes can let you listen to real audio, windows media, etc. radio streams through iTunes and thus the Airport express (and iPhone too!)... if you're still in search 2 years later ;)
