If you're running 8.5, you probably have an old iMac, one of the first all in one machines. OS 8.6 is considered to be a good version of the OS, very stable. The last OS in the pre-X era was 9.2.2. Either should run on your G3 machine and it's hardware and would be available from a variety of sources at nominal cost.
But, with the latest Intel chip machines now available, support for pre X is going away.
The world has moved way beyond that and if you jumped into something with a G4 processor, you'd only be 2 steps behind, but, could run something in the X family. That would suffice for your needs, with adequate memory available.
Bob.

Haven't got personal experience of this company, though a friend has recently bought Tiger from them:

Just as a head's up....I've got a 333Mhz iMac which came with 8.5. I'm now running 10.2.8 with no problems or speed issues. I upgraded my RAM to 192MB.

Nor do I... but my pal's version of Tiger works fine. Each disc came in a strong plastic case, and he's very happy with it all, especially with the UK price, too, being no more than the equivalent US$ price - we normally pay a substantial premium here in Blighty.
