My iBook (CPU:500HZ, RAM:256+64, HDD:10G) is running Tiger. I feel it's slow, so I would like to switch to Panther (Mac OS X 10.3).
I have tried to download a set of Panther install disk images by using eMule.
On my PC, I burnt these image files into CDs. Everything looks ok.
But when I use these disks to install, some error occured in the middle. To my surprise, when error appears, checking disk has been done succesfully.
I don't know why this happens.
If the image files is damaged in transportation, I think, there should be a suggestion in burning CD process, or at lease the disk checking before install should suggest file damage or something.
If the CD is all right, then there might be something wrong with the version of Panther, which I am using. Or maybe there must be a previously installed older OS to support new Panther. I am just guessing, and I have no detailed idea about this at all.
Does anyone has similar experience? And knows how to solve this problem?
Please share your wisdom.
Thanks / Elitward

Tiger would be sluggish with that amount of RAM, you'd do well to increase it to 512 MB at minimum.
As for those Panther disk images, looks like you got what you paid for. I don't think you'll get any help with pirated software here.

People who steal software make life increasingly difficult for those of us who don't.
So, my wisdom is don't expect people to help you in figuring out why your stolen software doesn't work.

It's reasonable to ask money for upgrading, but not for downgrading.

You're not downgrading. You're simply going back to whatever OS you last bought. Your iBook is from 2001 and came with CDs for the OS. Plus, if you did any upgrading of the OS between that and Tiger you should have those CDs, too.
What is the last OS that you bought for which you kept the CDs?

Why don't you do everyone a favor and not steal

First of all, it is quite simple to image that if I can manage to install a piratical Tiger without any help, I should can also deal with Panther now.
Then, let me put things more detailed, and I don't like to be blamed for the fault, which does not exist.
I bought the iBook from eBay, the former user gave me the G3 together with a set of Tiger install disks. The Tiger disks are provided by an Apple licenced store, before the AppleCare is due. So I believe the Tiger in my iBook is completely legal.
In this case, giving up Tiger and roll back to Panther is definitely a downgrading.

You have to pay for each Apple OS that you use. Most Mac users acquire their OS in numerical order (10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4) and stop when the latest OS requires more power for optimal use than what they have on their machine. But it doesn't matter which direction you move... if you want a particular OS on your Mac you have to pay for it. That's why places like eBay and Macofalltrades.com sell used Apple OS's.
The hardware requirements for Tiger on Apple's web site show that your iBook is at the absolute minimum of Tiger's specifications. So it's no wonder that Tiger "feels slow" on your iBook.
The iBook you bought on eBay appropriately came with the CDs for the OS that was on it. That part was good. Unfortunately, you encountered one of the risks of buying on eBay... the iBook came with an OS that was less than ideal for its specs. Thus, it wasn't the value you thought it was.
For your particular iBook model Tiger is not an upgrade in performance, it's a downgrade in performance. As with many other software companies you aren't entitled to use a different OS for which you haven't paid. Panther has recently sold on eBay in the $55 - $66 range.
The reality is that you bought an iBook that's very sluggish at running the OS that is installed on it. Moving to Panther or some previous OS would be an upgrade in performance in your situation.
And like it or not, you stole the version of Panther that you can't get to work on your computer.

Seeing as you're trying to install a pirated, unlicensed copy of OS X, no help can be provided here, so I'll be closing the thread.
Feel free to contact me using the private message feature here if you have any qualms about this.
