Given the age of my Powermac G4 and the recent problems with my Powerbook G4 12", I'm looking to replace both so I'm hoping a small MacBook/MacBookPro or Power Mac (or Mac Pro, or whatever stupid name they put on it) will be released soonish. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This should help knock down the price of the Dual Core 2GHz G5 I'd really like to get. Don't really want/need the MacIntel because than I couldn't run Photoshop v7.x. This G5 should speed up iMovie-->iDVD vs my DP G4. IMO..the time factor for DVDs is still too long, and someday a 2 hr DVD will burn in 10 minutes. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I want a Mini for my desktop and a Macbook Pro 17" to replace my Powerbook.
I'm down to my last thread of resistance especially now I can toss the gargantuan beige box on my desk.
Will he break or won't he...that is the question. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It might; why, are you tired of the desk? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
If my PB-G4 Ti didn't end up with a line on the screen, it is very highly unlikely that I would have bought the first version of MBP. I bought my Quadnostril G4-DP 1.25GHz essentially at the end of its cycle when they brought out the very first G5... the last G4 DT machine that boots in both OS versions. Actually, I have an older Gigabit ethernet (G4 500 DP) that is running very nicely with an updated 1.6GHz G4 - DP. I would be in no rush to buy anything, as always... I agree that if the price drop is really very good after Intel-Macs get out, I might pick up a Quad G5.

You see, I'm in a dilemma. My missus wants to keep Windows and her Windows software. I want to replace our Windows desktop with a mini. She won't have it unless she can still use Microsoft Money. I have Virtual PC but she doesn't want to have deal with the learning curve. And, I hate desktop clutter!
The scenario has changed somewhat with Bootcamp. All she has to do is choose which OS to boot into. I'm so close now to keeping the Higher Power happy and getting the green light on my mac purchase.
I don't want to rush out either and purchase brand spanking new technology and later regret it because of little issues (or big ones).
So I feel that around August will be a good time to buy from a buyers perspective. Bootcamp issues will have settled down and peace can be restored and balance to the force. And if by the time I purchase the processors are updated then that is a bonus.
Tell you what though, I have nearly capitulated several times. As yourself and others have advocated, even though you guys are mac Guru's commonsense and realism still reigns supreme and your insights and advice are valued by myself as well as others who read these forums.
Oh, the desire of the eyes can be so strong....
Have a great day!
p.s. Visit down under if you haven't been.

By the way, I know you get a lot packed inside the Mac Mini but it shouldn't break my desk should it???? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seems like a sensible plan to me... /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
And of course, you Mini would strain your budget as well as well as the desk far less than other options. At a later date, as your storage requirements increase, you can always buy an external drive; they too keep getting better, larger, and cheaper... wish everything went that way. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Peace in family is so much more important than anything else... all the best! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My Ti Powerbook has also served me very well and is running flawlessly. Its in mint condition with the exception of a couple of small marks on the display resulting from contact with the keyboard. Applecare expires in June, conveniently close to WWDC.
Are you happy with the MacBook overall? Generally I've heard they are a good machine so I am hoping when they are released Revision A issues will have been rectified. I could upgrade the Powerbook but have chosen instead to allocate those funds to the Macbook. A nice 20" widescreen LCD panel to complement the mini should take care of the desk without too much strain on the desk. When the PC goes I should get some light coming in from the window again
The 17" Macbook though will be for me and me only.
Just a thought on the Windows running on mac scenario and its implications. The way I see it is it really now more than ever an OS war. Software developers could take the view that if macs can run windows then just write software for Windows. I hope this doesn't happen. It also appears that Vista is becoming more like OSX with not only the interface but with included apps. Apple are going to have to tackle this head on and have some really solid updates in Leopard to keep its OS at number one. What do you think?
In fairness to those who read my previous posts, the mac/windows scenario at home is nowhere near as bad as I make it sound. Now with dual boot capabilities all preferences can be catered for on one machine. I like it.
I like it a lot.

I would have quite happy, had it been perfect but perfect it is not... it runs very hot-- can't keep it in the lap and I have bought one of those inch thick devices with a pair of fans that go underneath laptop and draw current from USB port. It helps a little by cooling and more by creating a layer between legs and the machine. Screen is adequate but not nearly as good as it could have been... brightness shift is too obvious if you move from side to side or up and down. The battery doesn't last long enough to see a single 2-hr movie. It is not anywhere near as fast as Apple worshippers would have you believe, just marginally better than my old Ti in some tasks and worse in a few... yes, I know it would seem faster someday when native software is available but we are talking about today.
Other than that, it's pretty good!
Generally speaking, it is a good idea to wait for the second version of machine after a major change... there are always numerous fiddly little annoyances that get taken care of by then.

Alam, thanks mate for the feedback on the Macbook. I read on another post comments relating to Apples screens and have to agree to some extent with the quality of Apples displays. Thats why I prefer the Mac Mini with a non apple external monitor to an Imac - don't get me wrong, the Imacs display is very, very good - I just don't feel its the best you can get for your money.
Its easy at this stage to suffer from "Analysis Paralysis", you get so caught up in the process of selection that you fail to move forward. For me my instinct tells me that the time is not quite arrived yet for my new mac purchase but it is very, very close. I hope its not an anti climax.
In regards to buying the second version of a particular model, would that apply to the 17" macbook when it comes out? (analysis paralysis again)
