Hi
I'm betting one couldn't regularly, or even more than a couple of times, pick up a clamshell ( "toilet seat" ) iBook by the screen bezel and not have it crack. Durability is one thing but the fact remains that no portable computer designer -- Don't nitpick about those really small ones, ... -- designs the system to be handled solely by the display ( LCD, bezel, ... ).

Oh I'd agree with you there. Whether it has one of the new glossy screens or an older LCD, you can still damage it either way if you're aren't careful.
My dad thought he was being smart by grabbing it by the frame (and not having his fingers on the screen itself) and picking it up that way. I kept reminding him that it wouldn't hold up, but he got so into that habit of doing it that by the time the year ended, the frame had broken off. I'm surprised he got away with it as for long as he did.

I feel for you. My wife and I saved for a year while in grad school to purchase a MacBook, used it on a computer desk only, and the screen started cracking after 7 days. There was no temp change, no liquid contact, and no pressure applied other than closing the screen. Apple tech support and store were as condescending as they could be, though the sales department showed patience and humanity towards us. Overall, a terrible experience that I found to be common at different threads and at MacinTouch's website. No one at Mac outside the sales dept treated us like we could possibly be telling the truth. Very hurtful.

Really? I just figued they were lumped into the same group. lol Well, I guess that makes me feel better. I think I'll still get some kind of insurance on it though. This will be my first Mac. I hope it turns out to be a positive experience. Thanks for the info. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I just bought a new macbook and after two days ran into a problem with the screen. Opened the Macbook to use and noticed weird lines all over the screen with no desktop display. Took it into the store where I bought it and they said the screen was cracked (no physical damage). Also said that it was not covered by warranty. Apple told me the same thing although I have no idea what could of caused the screen to crack. I've has 3 previous PC laptops that i've travelled with and never had a problem. I figure the only resort I have is to take apple to small claims court. Has anyone had any luck with apple in small claims court? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Hi
I'd try to talk to the manager, ... Explain exactly what happened that led up to the incident.
I've had my MacBook for nearly a year and I bring it back and forth from work and other places daily with zero problems. I even carry it in a regular / basic / cheap school backpack with just the Sleevz and ScreenSavrz I've had the ScreenSavrz for about four months or so.
I've also had a PowerBook G4 "Titanium" ( 1GHz ) and a Powerbook G3 "Lombard" ( 333MHz ) without any problems, including screen.
I'm not saying that it is but from what I've seen of my own experiences and others ( 'PC' or Apple ), it isn't unreasonable for Apple to claim misuse.

If there was misuse I would completely agree with you but there wasn't. As far as the manager goes they're really not able to do much since apple has a policy to not reimburse the store for screen hardware problems. They were sympathetic but could'nt do much. I feel that my only option is to pursue them in small claims court....to repair the screen will cost me $1000 (almost the cost of the macbook itself!). This is a case of buying a lemon.

we bought two macbooks six months ago. The screen on the one I mainly use cracked yesterday. No abuse. No blemish on the shell or the plastic screen. Just a 'broken glass' look underneath the undamaged screen.
We have Apple Care on both, and got the same runaround as reported perviously in this thread. The damage may have been induced by holding the closed macbook like holding a closed book, with the thumb pressed against the clamshell. Absurdly frail! I'm eager to learn if anyone has success with Apple. They are dropping the ball with this issue, IMHO.
We also have two iMac G5s, early models, and have replaced the powersupply on one, along with the main board, and we just experienced power supply failure for the THIRD TIME on the other one. sigh. We just got iMac Intels three months ago, a 20" and a 24". The big one is AWESOME! so far so good. Love Apples... hate problems. We labor in thorns, I guess.
on the Macbook screen repair, best price I've found so far: $395.00 at http://macservice.com/macbook.html
any better price? Thanks.

Here is one at $389 for overnite.

Last week (4/11 - ironically) I to had my MacBook screen crack and I was just sitting at my desk at work not even touching it. I went into the Apple store and when I told them what happened - they said I must have cracked it earlier and then when it heated up it became noticeable. What a crock - Worst part is this is from someone at the Apple store that knows me. They have me come in every couple of months and talk about podcasting.

They told me - $755 - broken out $100 for Labor and $655 for the LCD. But excuse me the total BOM (bill of material) cost for all the compents on a MacBook is less than $500. The LCD is less than $100 when manufactured - why so much now?

Don't even think of calling me a Mac Hater - I drank the cool aid back in the 80's - just listen to my podcast. One of my requirements at any new job is I get to use a Mac. I even went out on Saturday and picked up another Macbook and transfered all of the files to it - before I was to have this one repaired.

There are too many reports in this thread alone for this to be anything but a design flaw - Not to mention rediculous (if not illegal - then definitely immoral) price gouging on the repair cost. My crack is a perfectly straight line in the lower left hand corner. I am going to print out both pages of this thread and bring it back into the Mac Store and push the issue tomorrow - Time for the New Yorker to come out. There is no way the screen should be this fragile. I have an original Ti Powerbook from Jan 2001. That screen has taken way way more abuse over the years and nothing ever happened to it.

This all said - my next 10 computers will all be macs - but that does not mean I have to bend over and just take one fo the team.

I own and love a MacBook. I also keep it permanently on a riser with an external keyboard and mouse and never close the lid. Anybody who thinks these units are "built tough" needs to surf a little more.

I Own and Love my iBook. The screen looks very fragile but Ive had the book since 11-2005 and no problems. I know this thread is about the MacBook but the MacBook and iBook screens are very similar

i'm seriously on the verge of tears! i bought a new black macbook 3 months ago, i love it!! i own an imac which i've had for 3 years with no problems. anyway, i opened my macbook today and used it for an hour then come back and see a line on the screen. everytime i would flip the screen to put the computer to sleep and opened it back again, the crack kept getting worse. i made an appointment at my local store and got the 'any cracks are not covered under warranty' story. can i just tell you how careful i am with my apple products? i've hardly moved this baby around since i've owned it. i seriously have no idea what could've caused the crack and now i'm pretty much s.o.l. unless i want to shell out around $700.
i am beyond frustrated.
