Apple has a new Photo Management application called Aperture . It's billed as being for "professinoal photographers". Personally, I have not used it -- just got my copy and haven't installed it yet. It was recommended by the head of our Technology Department where I work.

I just took the tour... it looks amazing! A little advanced for what I need though.

It is far better than iPhoto.
BUT, it is slower and all your Mac apps will look for the iPhoto folder and not the Aperture folder.

If Graphic Converter came with your Mac, it's a good image browser, but it doesn't do everything iPhoto does. There's also iView for $50, or the Pro version for $200. They have a demo to download.
It depends on what it is you really want to do. There are lots of free browsers. Not too many really good organizers.

Iview looks to be the best one I've found so far. I'm going to give the demo a try and see if it does what I need it to.

Give iView MediaPro a try. It's not only a browser but an image management application with some editing capabilities and supports the ITPC and XMP metadata formats. You can run it in demo mode for 21 days.

I've created a Tutorial to assist users in converting over to the iVMP system. I use it as my primary image management tool and iPhoto for creating books, calendars, etc. The best of both worlds.

iPhoto is getting to me, too. It won't print to my Epson CX7800 and I cannot seem to be able to combine the libraries from my eMac and my iBook. I would love some ideas about dealing with those problems and I'll try the already mentioned suggestions for alternate programs. What about AdobeElements4? Has anyone used it?

My advice, go with Aperture, they recentlydropped the price from $500 to $300 and if you are a student like me its only $150. I disliked iPhoto because it never printed correctly, and Aperture has never failed me. I run a small photography business and Aperture has done wonders. I suggest going to your local Apple Store and taking the tutorial on it. I thought I knew the program well, but there was still so much more to learn. I hope this helped.

Those other applications mentioned here, do they organize your photos similar to iPhoto, with the month, day, year thing. That can get a little confusing, especially if you don't know when you actually took the picture. Finding photos is a pain.

Yes, they provide options for viewing photos by date. If you want better searching capabilities, start using the metadata fields. Metadata is designed for this purpose (as well as keeping track of other image properties), so you can add keywords to each photo you take that will be searchable from the finder.
