Excellent tip...it worked...but shame that this process has to be undertaken rather than have a 'sort' mode in Safari!!!

5 years and no one have been able to answer this question:
I use Safari but in general its regardless what browser I use, when I open my bookmarks from menu or when I choose to save a bookmark I have a BIG problem.
All folders from A-Z with subfolder where I have cataloged and include different bookmarks in each folder, are in a open mode, meaning you can see all the folders from A-Z and its subfolder in a open view. This is so irratating since I have over 1000 folders. The list is then very long and you get lost when scrolling down to choose the folder you want to save a bookmark in.
Is there anyone who know if and how you can open your bookmark list and that all folders are in a closed mode/view where you only see the main folders A-Z (like for example in Windows explorer where you see a "+" sign next to the closed folder.
Please help and best regards // alex.kjellberg@hotmail.se

This worked, but when I tried, I could not drag the now sorted file back from the desktop to the bookmarks window. So, I added a new bookmarks folder from the bookmarks menu, opened and then copied and dragged the alphabatized bookmarks into its window. Worked like a charm. I used to use book dog, but it does not work with OS Lion. This method is fine, although I think Apple should have a sort option in the edit menu.

I don't know if this will help in your case, but generally within OS X, you can option-click the little arrows in a list view and that will open/close the current folder and all of its sub folders as well.

I'm using Bookmark Sorter (http://www.softpinch.../bookmarksorter). Its not as advanced as the other bookmark programs but it sorts my bookmarks automatically and that is all I need.
