I just ordered a Mac Pro with the standard geforce 7300 GT, hoping to upgrade the card. There are mixed opinions on the Apple discussion site on whether the Mac Pro will run PCIe cards meant for the PC. Anybody know anything??

Hi
AFAIK, you need to flash the cards ROM to a Mac version before it will work. This is the same as has been needed for using 'PC' graphics cards with PowerPC Macs.

Ok, two questions/comments.
How would I flash the CD?
On the Apple discussion board, someone called the Apple store and was told that PC cards would work in the Mac Pro period.

Hi
Hhhmmm...I'd be skeptical about that, I think but cannot find, there was a similar discussion of this and even that an Apple Store employee told them it would work and it most certainly didn't. You could try it and see but I'd be willing to put at least a little down that it won't work.
I don't say this but a very few rare times but as far as flashing goes, Google it.

Hi
I can't recall off hand but this sounds way too familiar.
Considering the events, it was likely a Power Mac or other PowerPC system but the fact that an employee could still be mistaken.
I haven't been able to find any confirmation either way for this using Google.

Thanks for the help! I'll just wait and see how the standard card performs (although I'm not expecting much) and hope that ati and/or nvidia will start supporting PCIe on the mac soon.

I am also skeptical about off-the-shelf compatibility. Most graphics cards right now are made to work with motherboards with BIOS and the new Intel Macs ultilize EFI enabled motherboards. I think that until EFI becomes more mainstream (currently no planned support in Windows until Vista with service pack 1 at the earliest), I think that any cards that is made for the Windows market would need to be flashed to work with the Mac. Lastly, they most likely would be different flashing solution then what is already established for the Powermacs.
