I want to use my intel mac as a dvd server, I would rip the dvds to hard drives full quality, and fumble for the discs no more. my current mac is an intel imac, 20", and is not quite big enough for me to watch from a distance, and see all the detail in dvd quality video. I like using my mac for everything, audio, video, computing, etc. its like my catch all entertainment bat computer. I dont even own a tv anymore. I got eyetv to fill in my tivo like needs. the only thing I need is a good way to put a ps2 image on the screen (no, I hear the eyetv's game mode is not that great in image quality. I may just get a small lcd tv someday for that, and mount it near my mac)
I could get a mac pro, 30" apple display, and 4 internal 750gb hds. but that is a very expensive plan. better still, for now, would be to connect my current imac to a dlp rear projection hdtv, or dlp front pc projector, and get a few external HDs.
here are my worries though.
the nice thing about the mac pro is that there is room for cheaper internal hard drives, and the apple 30' display will look great in all aspects, as it is a computer display first, and I know dvds look good on those, as well as general computing. and I get a kick butt computer as a side effect. the downside is cost of course. thats around 5 thou. not counting hard drives.
I would other wise go for a DLP rear projection HDTV, which would run me about 2000-2500 dollars, to mate with my imac, but external hard drives are ugly, and I am unsure as to how good the quality would be desktop image wise, on that dlp hdtv. I am sure movies would look good, but what about using my mac in other areas? is there a very notible qualiy drop vs a real computer monitor? If so, I could live with a 30" apply display. the advantage here is that DLP HDTV can go much bigger than 30".
I would get a front DLP computer projector, but I have worries there too. I hear they are expensive to replace the lamps, and I hear those lamps dont last all that long to boot. And they dont work well in the daytime. but the form factor is much more attractive, and I could do general computing on the imac screen, and switch to heavy curtains and darkness for projected movies. and if I do compute on the projector, I think general computing stands to look better on a pc dlp projector than on a rear dlp HDTV. I just have to compute in darkness! And the picture on a front projector is as big as my wall. Thats always a plus.
So I guess I talked myself into a pc dlp projector for my imac (know a good one?) or wait for my savings to afford the mac pro + 30" apple display. any thoughts on this? what would you do? the dlp pc projector/imac/ugly external HDs combo, or the Mac Pro/internal HDs/30" Apple display combo?
