Cant connect to Router (Linksys)
#1
Posted 13 September 2006 - 10:42 PM
Hi,
I have tried looking everywhere but I cant find an answer, or a reason.
I am trying to connect to my linksys to configure it and I type in 192.168.1.1 and all that comes up is a page that say Authorization required...I dont get a chance to put in my username and password.
I type in 192.168.1.1 on my flat mates computer (windows) and a box pops up to put in your username and password and it logs in fine.
I am able to connect to the router to use the internet (as I am doing now) but I cant get into the router to configure it.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Thank you for contacting Linksys Technical Support.
To be able to answer you with an accurate solution to the problem that you are encountering, please provide us the following information:
1. What is the exact model and version number of your router? (Please take a look underneath your router and you should see the exact model and version number)
2. Who is your Internet service provider?
3. Are you using a built-in wireless card for the MAC?
4. How many computers are there and what is their operating system?
If you are using a WRT54G V.5 router (please verify this by looking underneath the router for the correct model and version number), please follow these steps on how to properly upgrade the firmware of your router.
1. Press the reset button so that the router will be set to factory default:
To do a hard reset on the router:
- Press and hold the reset button for 20 seconds.
- After that, release the reset button and unplug power from router.
- Wait for 10 seconds then plug the power back in.
2. While the MAC is still connected directly to your modem, please follow this link on how to properly upgrade the firmware of your router.
Title: How To Upgrade Firmware on the WRT54G Version 5
URL: http://linksys.custh...ated=1138999854
3. After you have performed the upgrade successfully, go back to the routers setup screen and look for Local IP address, change it to 192.168.2.1 and click on save settings. The new IP address of your router should be 192.168.2.1 and this is how you will access the routers setup screen in the future, please remember that.
4. Unplug power from modem, router and computer, wait for 20 seconds then plug the modem to the Internet port of your router and turn on modem first. Please wait for the lights on the modem to stay solidly lit then turn on router and computer (MAC computer should be wired directly to the router to see if it can access the Internet).
After following the above steps, please follow the instructions below on how to configure the wireless settings of your router.
1. Using the MAC computer that is plugged into the router directly with a network cable, open a web browser.
2. In the Address Bar type http://192.168.2.1 and press Enter.
3. A box should appear asking for a User Name and a Password. Leave the User Name field empty, and type your router password into the Password field (the default Password is admin) and click the OK button or press [Enter].
4. The Setup page should now appear. Click onto the Wireless page.
5. When the Wireless page loads, you should be on the Basic Wireless Settings sub-section.
6. Under Basic Wireless Settings check the Wireless Network Name (SSID) and make sure that you are connecting to that name. You can change it to any other name you like then save the settings.
7. Now, click onto the Wireless Security page. When the Wireless Security page loads, look for the Security Mode and select the desired settings below:
WEP: The default transmit key should be 1, it can be set to 64-bit or 128-bit.
A. If its set to 64-bit, type a word (any word will do) for passphrase and click on generate button. Copy the keys for KEY 1 that should be 10 characters long.
B. If its set to 128-bit, type a word (any word will do) for passphrase and click on generate button. Copy the WEP Key and that should be 26-characters long.
C. WPA: Type a word for WPA shared key, the actual word will serve as your password to connect wireless computers for WPA security settings.
You will use the keys that you wrote down to type it in once it asks for the network key on the wireless computer. If by typing in the network key (WEP Keys) did not work type it again but this time put a $ in front of the keys (e.g. $1234567890). That should allow the MAC to connect wirelessly from your router.
I will be glad if this helps.

It could be that your browser had remembered the username and password that you typed previously and is attempting to login for you with this information. You can try going to your browser's saved passwords section and remove the entry for your router or anything with that address.
Please let us know what worked for you.

Do you realize that this thread is about a year and half old and the original poster is potentially long gone from the forum (he/she only had two posts)?

I have three answers to that question
1. No, actually I didn't realize that... any idea why it would have showed up on the front page as an active topic? -- because that's how I got to this post in the first place.
2. As you can tell by my join date I'm new here but not new to forums in general. I received an email notification of a reply to this thread. It's likely the original poster did as well.
3. Someone like yourself with about 1300 posts ought to know that even if the original poster / intended audience does not view this information, it's possible that someone with a similar problem will come across this information again in the future and it might serve a purpose to that person at such a time. That's one reason why I prefer to offer assistance in this manner versus directly through email, mailing list, or chat.

Don't know why it showed up on the front page.
I don't have an issue with you posting to it. I was merely pointing out that since the thread is about a year and a half old and the original poster had only two posts (one on this thread), it is highly unlikely that this person is still active in the forum...and may have killed their membership. Thus, your comment to "let us know if this works" is likely fruitless. Does not mean that it might not be useful to others. And it does not mean that the original poster might not still get notified.
Take a deep breath. No offense meant. Just trying to point out something that you might have missed.
