Yesterday I tried to connect with my sister via iChat AV for the first time in several months. We were unable to establish a video chat although this has worked well in the past year+. We get the message that the video chat session is starting and the little spoked circle turns for about 15 seconds. Then a message appears that there has been a communication error. After several attempts I went to the Apple support pages. Seems that many people are having this problem and that it may be related to the 10.4.8 update. Lots of suggestions posted having to do with Firewalls, closed ports, etc. Nothing we've tried seems to work.
Chris: We need your expert investigation skills to help with this one!

I just don't understand why this widespread problem is not getting any press on MacCentral or any of the other Mac web sites. The Powerbook shutdown problem was covered by all the sites. How long did it take Apple to deliver the firmware fix for that problem? I'm sure it would have taken longer in the absence of publicity. We are over a month now where large numbers of Apple customers are being disappointed by this iChat problem. Not good for Apple. I hope they do something about this soon. Even an acknowledgement that the problem exists and they are working on it would be reassuring....

You know - the 10.4.8 update has been a pain in the ass for many i think. I'm just hoping to God that apple will release a 10.4.8.1-sorry-we-screwed-up fix asap. iBook's being tossed into KP's and Airports stop functioning. It's a mess it seems - and I wish I didn't tell my friends to always keep software up-to-date, cause this time it really hit high and bit them in the arse.
But, I don't think that will happen, seeing as how 10.5 is nearing. I only hope they'll release a more solid 10.4.9 shortly and not wait out for Leopard to appear.
