Hi All,
Because I work in Real Estate we're forced to use Windows products.
With the Intel Mac I have a question/s.
1. At this time would Parallels be the best solution in a Windows specific Industry?
2. We are forced to use IE, what protection should be taken against the bad guys? (name software)
3. Is there anything Parallels, cannot open that is written specifically for Windows?
4. What are the major hurdles (at this time) using Parallels?
I know the questions are simple but are pretty basic to the Industry.
Christmas cheers,
Peter /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

1) Yes, or Boot Camp if for some reason Parallels didn't work.
2) I have no idea.
3) Only things that required accelerated 3D graphics (games) or use a hardware protection dongle of some sort -- at least, I haven't yet found anything it won't open
4) $79.

Rob,
For me, I would strip Windows down to practically nothing. (if I can) No games etc......
The MLS's (Multiple Listing Services) are run in Windows IE (specific code).
So If you wanted to buy a property in San Diego I need Windows IE to do a search.
If we found you a property, it would then be written up using WinForms. An eform, saved as a pdf file, but created for Windows. I just checked Winforms and they have added an online site for the Mac
Mac online Maybe they are learning. But the searches are still in IE.

That's why I asked about IE, Winforms. A stripped down product would be wonderful because I wouldn't use it for anything else. That I do on my Mac. I don't even have e-mail setup on the Windows box I have now.

These are Homepage password sites that give an idea.

I find it troubling that they have you so forceably placed into Microsoft software. Not just OS compatibility, but specific Microsoft coding, which is no easier than a different, more universally compatible format.

I captured a few shots using Firefox. I can do a lot, except the main deal and that is hitting the search button/field after entering my criteria. They have it coded that way, yet I can do other stuff. This from a multi-million dollar Industry.

I also work in the real estate industry and have to deal with the fact that most of the real estate and mortgage industry is extremely windows centric. I have taken the approach that I want to run my Mac in that world so I find solutions that work for me. In the mortgage business Virtual PC was strong enough to run Origination software and that is all I needed. In Real Estate, the MLS and Contracts programs though web based require IE not just a windows box. I have strong opinions on this but my opinions are not a solution. For a time I used a dell pc just for the programs I needed and the Mac for everything else. Now the Dell is with a new owner and I Run Parallels/winXP on my Intel Mac and can do everything I need plus more. IE works with out problem in parallels. Remote desktop works great too. I can remote to the office PC. Scan docs at the office and FTP to the Mac. Run TopProducer Software(IE only), MLS no problem. Zipform and contracts works great. There are many options for printing to PDF in windows(cutePDF) for one. I have not run into a problem yet using parallels. Of course I can do MLS on the Mac side also with some glitches. I would like the Real Estate world to wake up but I cant wait around for a major paradigm shift.
I try to think in possible solutions not my complaints. I maybe the odd ball to those stuck in their windows only thinking. Some cant even imagine there is something they dont even know they dont know.
Better finish before I start a rant. With a Mac and Parallels it works.

Thanks Jmike,
My original question was about Parallels and now I know.
Yes, I'll be buying an Intel Mac to do the same as you, and I hope a lot of other RE Agents/Brokers/Offices do the same.
What gets me going is how the RE Industry likes to promote themselves as being on the cutting edge.
Anyway, before I start to rant,

Sounds like you'll have a nice workaround for RE/MLS in the near future. This might give you time to register at your local JC for badminton or Excel and qualify for the student/teacher discount. There doesn't seem to be a minumum for units to qualify. A nice savings if you purchase via Apple. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
