I recently started having problems with my Powerbook:
-It was slow.
-The menubar buttons were acting up (Airport icon not showing up, Bluetooth icon not going away, time not working)
-Applications acted strange on startup (iTunes began opening automatically)s

I suspected the hard drive to be the source of my troubles. I went into disk utility and followed instructions on repairing permissions which worked fine but had no effect on my complications. I than clicked went through with 'Verify Disk' and 'Repair Disk' which brought up...
Verifying volume Macintosh HD
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid sibling link
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair

Can someone help!?

it's like a surgeon performing surgery on himself.....
it cannot self repair and you need to pull out the original boot disks.
boot from the install disk and go into Disk Utilities.
now Disk Utilities can repair your hard drive.

no it doesn't.
but you still need to boot from another disk.. either another hard disk or the install disk to repair the boot volume.
true in OS 6 thru X
so we'll let him get away with it this time /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sorry, I was late for class and completely frustrated about my situation thats no excuse for not following board rules.
Machine Name: PowerBook G4 15"
Machine Model: PowerBook5,8
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
Is there any possibility this is a physical problem with the hard drive and not something that could be repaired via OSX?
I tried repairing off the disks that came with my Mac but had no luck... same error.
Thanks for the help.

I just continued to back up all my files (luckily I got them all) and now my computer is even worse off.... the installation disks won't work (I get an error that says I cannot do a reinstall).
I am not sure at all as of what to do next... any remedies?
How much would a hard drive replacement cost?? Can I go to an Apple Store instead of shipping the Mac?

you DON"T want to install.
when you boot up with the disk, before you click on anything in the dialogue box, at the top in the menu bar....
Installer>>>Open Disk utilities
and run that DU.

It just continued to get worse, I had to reinstall and I did it before I saw your note.. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif sorry.
What can I do now besides bring it to get repaired? What will be required to repair or replace?
I have a workable drive (disk utility says so) but I can't get OSX to install.

STOP whatever you are trying to do and find someone who knows how to work on macs to help you in person.
OR take it to a repair shop that works on macs.

Alright...
Will an Apple store be able to isolate my problem, give me an estimate, or send it out for repair? I don't care about losing data (I figure it's a hard drive problem) so I just want to get it fixed no matter what.

Unfortunately I do not... all my friends are either using Windows or want a Mac themselves.
So yeah, I'm going to a Apple Store as soon as possible.
Just a question, is this something that can be repaired without replacing parts or will an extra HD be necessary? I'm just curious what the repair will entail and what the cost might add up to.
Thanks for all the help guys.

it is hard to say over the web what it will need.
have apple look at it and get an estimate and take back your computer and post here what they say to do.
