Alright, it's off to bed for now... I'm eager to post the solution (even if it does involve sending it in) cause I know how hard it was to find anything on my problem. I'm hoping this'll help other people with the with the same predicament.
I do think I already said it but thanks for all your help, you guys are extremely helpful (even if I did kinda screw up the process /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ).

So I came home and looked at my computer and I figured I'd start it up just to see if anything had changed (though why would it). The blue screen, the spinning graphic, the logo, and than (holy crap) the screen informs me that Mac is set for installation (before, as I probably said above, it wouldn't let me). I continue through the dialog boxes feeling a little like the computer was just going to do the same thing again... it doesn't. OSX successfully installed and I'm posting from it now.
Is there still a possibility there might be a problem with it?
I'm unable to verify disks using the disk utility app on the HD. Is there a simple explanation for why that would be or is it a problem?

This is very late post on this topic...
I recently had this same problem on my Imac 24" Intel duo, with 250GB HD.
HFS volume needs repair, repair failed.
I tried all of the fixes mentioned, none worked in fact my H Drive died during trying to fix it, I was in the process of buying a new disc from apple and the tech support guy suggested a fix...
I had already backed up my documents as I realised something bad was in the offing...
anyway to restore the HD I inserted the OSX install discs, went the Disc Utility, Erase disc, mac extended (journaled), click on security options and select zero data.
Then erase disc, this takes about 6 hrs.. this process restored my HD,when this is done, again select disc utility go in to partition and set the partition to 1.
This fix saved me ripping apart my computer by myself which is a nightmare on the 2007 version of the Imac, it saved me going o mac support which would have cost me time money and down time.
all I had to do was re-install my backed up apps and docs.
so if all else has failed you may as well try this fix before you go spend money....
