I've been waiting for this phone for my wife and I for a long time and so I was excited about the keynote. The only thing I do wish is that the hard drives were bigger.
Now that they are no longer Apple Computer, it might be a good idea to change the name of the show to Appleworld Expo. This would better describe the direction Apple is taking.

It's a keynote, not a Fidel Castro speech. Adding announcements for all those other products would drag it out way too long and dilute the impact of the two primary product announcements. If they had rambled on for four hours you'd probably be complaining about missing lunch!

LOL... that's what people said 5 years ago when the iPod (with a 5GB hard drive) was announced for $399.
Every year at this time we get the comments that it's too expensive.
Getting rather predictable that post-key note comments will include "disappointed" and "too expensive". Shows how many prognosticators are off-mark on what consumers really want.

I was hugely disappointed as well.
As predicted, Apple ignored the Mac hardware portion of their lineup completely.
iPhones, iPods, TV appliances...who cares! It's all about catering to Joe iPod and Mr. Multimedia these days.
The biggest insult was the fact that it's now Apple Inc. instead of Apple Computer. Might as well change the name to The iPod Company or Hipster United Inc.

I was also disappointed.
Thinking about trying our iWork, but am waiting for 07.
Getting ready to buy a Mini, but am waiting for Core 2.
Want to replace my Power Mac, but the Mac Pro is a tad too expensive.
Want to replace my 23-inch ACD with a 26/27 inch.
So, I have money and am ready to spend, but need something to buy.
,dave
P.S. The iPhone is way cool, but I am more of a desktop computer person than a phone person.

I get the feeling they will eventually do that. Just not today

man - every party has a pooper that is why we invited you. with all the anticipation, etc. and jobs actually comes through and you're bummed because no ilife discussion - give me a break.
as for the gimme just a phone crowd - there will be no just a phones anymore. plus, the reason apple went into phones was the threat to ipods from multi-function phones, not so they could create a neat plain phone for whiners. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

First time - EVER - a keynote introduction contained nothing whatsoever of interest. iPhone? Connects through Cingular and requires a two year contract. Dead on arrival. Apple TV? Worlds most expensive video extension cable. A new Airport using an unapproved protocol, months after the market was flooded with cheaper devices? Be serious. And then they change the name of the company to reflect their waning commitment to personal computers. I'm disgusted.

Talk about the Christmas morning syndrome, Rob. Jobs also didn't announce (today) the end to world poverty, or an anti-matter device. Calm down. Will there not be new Apple software and hardware? There will. What they showed today was stunning enough for two hours.

Apple can't announce every new product they develop all at once and certainly can't make everyone happy at the same time. My prediction is that there will be more announcements over the next two or three months that will include new video iPods with similar form factor and interface to the iPhone, dual quad core Mac Pro's, FCS 6, and Leopard. Remember, SJ's parting words were "We'll see you all soon."

Agreed. Also, remember that a lot of this is about marketing. If Steve even gave passing mention to all of the other things that Rob wanted to hear about, like upgraded Macs and "iSight Displays", that would have been that many less "Special Events" Apple could have held. Each event (like the Keynote or a stand alone announcement) gets its own bucket of publicity in the mainstream press, which is incredibly valuable. The Beatles coming to iTunes certainly deserves its own event, since it's making just a little bit of history on two fronts (digital downloads of their songs plus seemingly final peace between the two Apple companies).
I do agree with Rob that the Airport Extreme should have had at least a sentence devoted to it today within the Apple TV section; and it is a little curious that iLife 07 wasn't mentioned since it is usually part of MacWorld SF, but I'll bet we will see a number of announcements over the next few months or even weeks.

I agree with the article - almost word-for-word. These are such niche products, they will have little impact in the day-to-day Mac support and training I provide for Mac users in my area. Whereas features of new hardware - upcoming OS, Apple's consumer and pro applications are what I deal with most days. I can barely think of any user I know that would spend $500-$600 on a phone/video iPod/internet access device. The features are cool - but I see it being more of a status toy. It looks to be far too small a screen to be of any real use, in terms of internet access. I mean I know people complaining that a nice resolution 12" screen is just too small for regular usage. It's really just a striped down computer, at the price one would expect - with inadequate storage to make it useful to accomplish all they are touting it to do, IMHO. And it's at least six months away, or seven, or eight - as we have seen past new announcements of hardware slide, or not happen (anyone see that 3 GHz G5?). Time will tell and it would be great if we who came away wanting more will be answered to later, but it has been THE event of the year and a lot of key stuff got no time. Not good.
Also, they are hoping to get one percent of the cell phone market. Most people pay little to nothing for their cell phone, so I'm hard pressed to see this making the grade. Especially since the available storage really is inadequate for any kind of real video iPod usage, without a lot of hassle. Also - with so potent an operating system installed - how much space is it taking? And so, how much usable space is left - after formatting, OS and "desktop grade" applications?
