We're using our iMac as base station. I get the expected so-so Airport range with my TiBook 550.

Contrary to most people's experience, my son's iBook 500 has much poorer reception than the TiBook, often no better than 30-50 feet. Any ideas why we're getting such poor Airport reception with the iBook?

No, I'm not answering my own question...just trying to keep my posting active and visible. Any help would be appreciated. Otherwise, I may make a trip down to the closest Apple Store and talk with the resident genius.
Thanks.

Are there any other base stations near you? I have had a problem with range where my iBook has simply grabbed an IP form a neighbor. I got very frustrated about the lack of range until I figured out what had happened.

Otherwise my IBook gets great reception.

Nope, no other base stations in the vicinity, and my TiBook gets much better reception than the iBook.

An update. Brought my son's iBook to the Apple Store in Peabody, MA, and spent about 45 minutes witht he most helpful "genius," Jared on 8/18. He finally surmised that the iBook had a faulty antenna and offered to send the iBook in for service. It was sent to Houston on 8/19.

Amazingly, we received the iBook back today (8/21), fully functional, with a new internal antenna.

Very impressive service all the way around. With all the Apple bashing around here, credit where credit is due.
