Hello everybody.
I am running a PowerMac G4 AGP with 1 gig ram with duel X 1.6 mhtz processors. When I fire up either Safari or Firefox, web browsing is extremely slow compared to my XP laptop that is right next to it. (Mac is hardwired to internet and PC is wireless but both to the same router).
What I mean by slow is that you enter a sites url, the Mac sits there for a while (30 to 60 seconds sometimes) then the site will load (slow). Now, if you refresh the page while you are waiting, it does load faster, but not that fast. Comparatively to the PC, light years behind in speed.
Now I have seen other forums talking about this, but nothing really to cure it. I am convinced that it is something in the TCP/IP settings that is killing my Mac.
Speed test results:
PC-341 kb/s download and 144 kb/s upload
G4-48 kb/s download and 78 kb/s upload

Does the Network Utility show anything useful (like errors)? Have you tried a different cable from the Mac to the router?

Thanks for the reply. No errors and yes, I have changed the cable and it is the same.

My only other thought is that the DNS settings may be outdated or incorrect. The DNS server should be set to get its settings from the router, and those should match what your ISP says they should be. But this generally affects speed of accessing a site initially, not sustained transfer speeds.
You may need to do a little troubleshooting. If you can connect another computer to the router via that Ethernet line and/or try that Power Mac on another network, it should tell you if the problem is with the mac or the router.

Try bypassing the router. If this works well, it will certainly rule out serious problems internal to your computer.
Since I have almost exactly the same setup as youG4 hardwired plus wireless XP laptop, I will run through my settings. I am running OS 10.3.
System Preferences > Network control panel > Show Built-in Ethernet

> TCP/IP:
Ipv4.....Using DHCP
DHCP Client ID.....blank
DNS Servers.....blank
IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Router are automatically assigned

PPPoE > Connect.....unchecked

PROXIES:
Proxy server configurations.....all unchecked
Use Passive FTP.....checked

ETHERNET:
Configure.....Automatically

A final note on hardware. I once fried my Ethernet board in my laptop (electrostatic discharge from my finger right into the port). HTTP became painfully slow (start/stop/start/stop) but FTP downloads remained just as fast as always!!!

I looked at my settings and they are identical to yours. SteeeeeeeeeeeeRike 2 LOL...

I had the same problem with both my imac and mac notebook. Under DNS Servers type 4.2.2.2
