As the reviews of InDesign CS3 accumulate, James Dempsey talks about his first few weeks with the updated page-layout program. [more]

I can add in at least one more head shaker to the list. Why is there no Maximize Screen mode like in Photoshop CS3?
If you don't know what that is, it's an extremely useful feature where your document never actually gets covered by an expanded panel dock. In Photoshop, go into Maximize mode and then click open the panel dock on the right to show all the panels at once and your active documents boundaries auto resize to fit the new space. Why this is not in InDesign CS3 is a total mystery to me.

Also, I'm STILL waiting for Photoshop's scrubby sliders to make their way into the REST of the creative suite. So far, they seem to be the sole domain of the PS developers for reasons that I'll never understand. Actually grabbing a slider with your pointer seems so outdated to me, it drives me crazy.

I just want to be able to resize a document from the upper left corner ..instead of resizing from the middle. Did they fix that by chance?

You are so right on that one.

"Why is there no Maximize Screen mode like in Photoshop CS3? "Agreed! When I saw that in the PS beta, I hoped it'd make it into ID. The rest of Adobe needs to make the PS gang give up more of their secrets. My biggest gripe with the new UI is the huge Paragraph Style Options panel, made almost twice as large to accomidate the new Bullets and Numbering features. What's the use of a "Preview" option if most of the document is concealed behind this Mega-Panel?Finally, they need a display frame option to go with display page and spread. Editing and proofing require a view that's larger than the latter two give and klutzing around to keep a frame on screen is a pain.

I'm not talking about resizing a box ..I'm talking about resizing the document. Unless there is some neat trick i need to learn, you CANNOT resize the document from the upper left.

-----------
Have you tried pressing CommandOption=?
This will center and fit your selected item(s) into view. It's not exactly perfect though. Sometimes it doesn't fit that tight leaving more space around the selection than I feel is necessary.

I'm wishing for a global preference to check/uncheck ALL of the Preview boxes on panel dialogs. It gets a bit old clicking "Preview" dozens of times in different areas of ID to see what my changes are going to look like.

Agreed. It's little things like that (in most all software) that makes computer life a real pain in the behind. To be honest, I never noticed how much I hate having to click Preview until I read these comments.

What about font substitution? Does this version finally have an option to remember what fonts I want substituted for other fonts? I'm tired of having to manually select Times Roman to replace Times New Roman every time I open a new file sent to me, for example. Even PageMaker had this feature years ago, with an option to substitute temporarily or permanently in the file.

Nope, not in there. However, I think this is more of a job for a font manager rather than ID.

I know FontAgent and Extensis are the major font handling players but what about LinoTypes FontXplorer X? Any clue when they will have a CS3 plugin available?

I haven't heard anything on a release date, but I'm sure they're working on it. Given that it's a free application, they probably don't put the priority on it like they would if it were a payed-for app.
