My Screen Capture function fails. It makes a "clicking" shutter-like noise, but nothing is saved to either the Desktop or the Clipboard.
I've repaired Disk Permission with no improvement to the problem. Running Disk Utility's Verifty Disk produces the following end-of-results text:
"Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
Checking volume information.
Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 47633097 instead of 47628706)
Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair"
Additionally, the "Repair Disk" tab is grayed-out (unavailable).
I've read somewhere that you can't repair a disk while using it (or something along those lines). Question is: How do you repair it?
After you've stopped laughing at my ignorance, please explain how I'm supposed to go about this. Be as plain as you can be in your explanation (maybe with a step-by-step solution).
For what it's worth. . . I'm running OS X 10.4.9 on an iMac 20". I generally us a Widget for screen captures, so I've no idea how long the OS X function hasn't worked properly, or if there are other problems that have so far gone unnoticed. Essentially, I simply want to run a "clean machine."

Not sure fixing your volume is the problem but here's the procedure - It says safe mode fixes your directory. Document at Apple to fix volumes .
Please peruse the instructions before you jump into these things. Especially things like "after I boot into safe mode how to I restart to get back into a regular mode...".
You can also choose to go into Single user mode and follow the directions for using fsck.

True, you can't easily repair your boot disk from itself. Sort of like doing your own brain surgery...sort of! Boot from your original System Installation CD. Choose your language, ignore the operating system installation screen. Instead of installing your system, select Utilities from the menu bar, select Disk Utility. Now you can repair the disk.
If DU can't repair it, you need to look at more powerful medicine like Disk Warrior.

Ok, did a Repair Disk and fixed what problems were found. However, the problem with getting Screen Capture to work via Command-Shift-3 (or -4) still fails. It makes the shutter-click sound, but nothing's copied. Any clues?

Maybe disable that Widget and trash the prefs for Apple's screencapture. You can find it: ~[Hm]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screencapture.plist.
A new preference will be created when you try again, but it should work..

Did you use Spotlight to look for files ending with png ? Should be something like Picture 1.png

Thanks to all for the tips. Cleaned-up the .plist file, disabled the Widget, all now works fine. Help carefully exlained is appreciated.
