I am not to sure about the forum policy and maybe an Admin (or Peter?) can set me straight but I think the word "backup copy" in most cases is used as a less than subtle cover for piracy, as such such questions I think are normally not answered.
You can backup none copy-protected media using the standard utilities that come with OS X. I however don't want to be posting a step by step guide to copying games or any other software as 99.9999% of the users googling for it will be stealing software not making backups! Also depending on the DVD/CD the disk might be designed so making a copy will not work so although the backup might allow the installer to work the game will not register the DVD as an original as it is a copied disk.
However as I know Aspyr (and other companies like Feral who I work for) will supply replacement DVD/CD's if you damage your original. The "I might scratch it" excuse is no longer the excuse as it might have been before.
If you happen to be one of the 0.00001% percent of people who actually have bought the software and want to make a backup, I am sorry. In my defence the other 99.999999% just want to steal software and when they don't know how to do it themselves they ask veiled questions about backups instead hoping to be able to use the info to help them burn an image to a disk after they downloaded it from some torrent server on the internet.
Best Regards,
Edwin
