Excellent article/hint! Thanks!
Within the same context, sorta, is there a way to change the speed of the slide show? Actually, I'm using the slide show option in PREVIEW, but I can't help but think this is all the same engine.
I do presentations before large groups and for my purposes, the Apple slide show option is all I need. I just wish the speed could be defined.

I don't know why y'all are stressing over this, the controls are right there in iPhoto. See all the icons along the bottom? One of them is labeled Slideshow. Click it and you'll get a preferences pane where you can toggle the onscreen controls, set the speed, transitions, music and few other things.
at least that's in iPhoto 4...

I am running 10.4.9 and iPhoto 6.0.6 (322).
With the controls display turned off, the controller will appear when you press the spacebar or arrow keys but it fades away in two seconds. If you move the mouse, the longer controller bar appears but it fades away in three seconds. However, if you leave the mouse positioned over it then it will stay indefinitely. Since I am manually (slowly) stepping through the slides a two second disturbance doesn't bother me. Not to point of hacking up iPhoto anyway.
