When I attempt to run Boot Camp assistant it refuses to run and tells me that I need the latest Boot Rom Firmware.
I've checked the Apple site and my Macbook, original Core Duo, is upto date at 1.4f12 but the Boot Rom version is at MB11.0061.B02.
I'm not sure what I need to update though as when I attempt to run the latest firmware update, 1.1, it tells me that I don't need this update.

Hi
You do indeed have the latest SMC firmware version ( 1.4f12 ) but your EFI firmware ( Boot ROM ) is just one behind the last. The latest version is MB11.0061.B03.

When I try to run that update it says 'This computer does not need this update'.

Hi
Very interesting... What version of Mac OS X are you running?
I ask because there are notes of others having problems and maybe some later versions of OS X broke the updater somehow.

Hi
H-h-h-m-m-m... I had that feeling. I wonder if it is something Apple didn't think about and messed up in the latest update.

This would happen on the weekend when I've lent out my external HDD and my 8GB pen drive and used my last blank DVD so I can't even back-up and re-install.

Hi
The only other thing that I can find at the moment...
Taken from Apple Knowledge Base Article #303364 - About firmware updates for Intel-based Macs
Quote:

Note: This update requires the computer to be started from a non-RAID volume. If you are starting up from a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) subsystem, you must start up from a non-RAID storage device to apply this update.

No RAID and no external devices plugged in.
Cheers for your efforts, MacCheetah3.

Hi
I didn't think so as it isn't that likely on a portable but I thought it was worth a shot. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Well...Maybe Apple will fix this problem, maybe there will be a workaround, or maybe you'll just have to reinstall to get to a previous version of OS X. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I've spent an hour or so on the Apple forums and this is a long running issue which Apple appear to be doing nothing about.
Does anybody know if a complete re-install of 10.4 will solve the problem or will it make no difference because the problem is the Boot Rom?

Hi
Educated guess wise, I would say it is something with 10.4.9 / 10.4.10 and moving back to 10.4.6 - 10.4.8 should allow you to update the firmware but I'm not 100% sure on that.

I did a wipe and re-install with no success.
Spoke to Apple today, still within 3 months of purchase, and they don't have a clue so it's back to the Apple Store tomorrow.

Hi guys,
I have this exact same problem! It has been going on for about 4 months now and it is driving me crazy! I have called Apple Tech Support and they can't help me as it is still in BETA. I was wondering if anyone has any luck solving it? I re-installed OSX on a fresh partition and it still didn't solve the problem. The bootrom version I have is B02 and B03 is the latest. When I try and run the updater "alert: This install is not needed"
I hope someone can help me solve it :P
Thanks
DeanCorp
