The initial reaction to the iPhone is much much more friendly then to the original iPod. Few understood or even noticed the first iPod. The whole concept was very new and not complete at that time. The original iPod was also a bit like the first Mac. The hardware was not upgraded by Apple and the system software also stopped evolving very fast. The operating system also didn't came from Apple.
The iPhone is different. It already comes into an ecosystem (iTunes, iTunes Music Store, accessories, ...) that is readily available.
And there is the biggest difference: the iPhone is a software platform for Apple. The hardware is very neutral (no fixed UI) and the software can shape the device. It is a powerful computer with 128MB RAM and 8Gbyte disk. Plus it runs an operating system that us widely used inside Apple.
So whatever features the iPhone lacks, Apple can add it as long as it is software. That's also a strengths of the company. The evolved Mac OS X during several releases to a very usable OS. The same will happen with the software for the iPhone. Other features will be added via the iPod dock interface (the radio in the iPod remote control, the Nike+ interface, ...). Apple has indicated that it will enhance the software in the next coming years.
So, buyers of the first iPhone have got a gadget that will get more features over time... buyers of the first iPod got a device that didn't evolve much.

Oh that gorgeous high-resolution widescreen. It invites you to touch it - which is just as well, given that's how you interact with the iPhone.
