no kidding. No new iMac for me possibly. I'm going to hold off on final judgement until I see and touch it in person. But glossy screen finishes do nothing for me.

Yeah. The thing is, there are anti-glare, anti-reflective coatings for glass that can make the glass seem truly invisible. A few of the CRTs that I have have that and their images are very nice and easy to look at.

I'm new to the Mac - I was waiting for this announcement. An upgrade for hardware sounds good - don't really care about the appearance at all.
I guess I'm mildly happy - I hope there's more to come from this announcement. A quick launch of Leopard would be great!

What is up with the black boarder around the screen? Rumors of multi-touch would make it worth while, but w/o it I think the black boarder makes this thing look ugly - at least from what I have seen so far.

Read carefully. Market share is growing three times faster as in if PC market share is growing by 1% per year Apple us growing at 3% per year. It does not matter if someone has 100% installed based this is about quarterly, monthly, yearly sales etc. If you constantly grow faster than your competition you will eventually reach a level playing field in terms of installed market share... although it could take 1000 year depending on the size of the market.

Not true... if you're doubling every interval the growth is exponential. eg. If this year Mac market share is 3% next year it would be 6%, then 12%, then 24% etc.. But of course it's all relative to your competitors growth

Funny, isn't it. Pro snobs said CRTs were better than LCDs for photos. But CRTs are glossy. Now LCDs have glossy screens, just like CRTs, and now pro snobs say glossy can't work. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

PC-fans will be admired of these imacs, I think...

Why? Yet another dead-end model with no way to be upgraded. Who does Jobs think he's fooling with the crap all the cables a PC requires? The only way to "upgrade" the iMac is to start stringing cables out of the back. TV Tuner, Lightscribe DVD burner, a second hard drive, a local printer, audio to a real set of speakers...three of those things could be shoved into a standard Dell. With an iMac you're left with a bunch of boxes strung about...Steve really has to get past the appearance thing; I'm not really all that concerned what my computer looks like so long as it's not hot pink or something.
Think the Apple computer slogan should be either:
"We give customers what they want so long as they like what we give them."
OR
"We think differently so you don't have to." which would be followed by an extreme close-up of a sheep (so all you see is fluffy white fur) and a soft "baahhh."

It looks nice and all for those that like AIO's (I don't and never will)... but if Apple axes the Mac mini I still won't be buying an iMac so it's a moot point for me. So the question is whether Apple gets my money sooner vs. later, I can hold out and buy a Mac Pro but it might take me 18-24 months vs. 3-4 for an ably equipped mini, or 6-8 for a reasonably priced upgradable headless machine with nicer specs. I won't buy the mini 'til it's upgraded to a reasonable spec position for the pricepoint although it's more inline with my preferred layout (I'd take it a bit bigger to accomodate REAL desktop drives, easier access to the RAM ala iMac, can keep Superdrives across the board since they're reasonably cheap, etc.). The longer Apple lets the mini languish, the longer they lose out on my business. I bought 2 of the original G4 models + Applecare for each. I want a new one but the current Intel ones aren't as much of a bump as they should be overall IMHO, esp. with the GMA Graphics.

I'm also leery about the glossy screens... wish they had offered a choice as they do with the laptops.
Also, how about something truly radical- like a user swappable graphics card? It's absurd that they hobble every iMac with a $79 graphics card. The only Mac where you can choose your own card is the Mac Pro.
