Anyone got a fix for opening Word 2007 PC files. The MS plug-in doesn't work and I tried installing OpenOffice - that doesn't work either.

You mean that the XML converter does not work for you? Just want to make sure we are talking the same thing.

I think I heard El Jobso say that iWorks 08 (Pages) contains compatibility for Office 2007. Am I right?

That's correct. I installed the most recent one.

Interesting. The only thing that I could think to try would be to try to re-install it.
I also believe the other poster is correct...I believe that Pages '08 will open Word 2007 documents...I remember reading it somewhere.

OpenOffice will not work, but NeoOffice should. NeoOffice.Org
You can also download a free 30 Day demo of iWork 08 from Apple. It will open them as well.

Office 2007 for Windows, and the upcoming version for the Macintosh,
use the new OpenXML file format, a new open standard (OpenXML is free
for any developer to license and use in perpetuity, and Microsoft has
even included a covenant not to sue) based on XML. However, the old
file format is still available in the program if one wants to use it
for import or export.
While the new format was originally going to be proprietary, it is now
an ISO-certified open format and everyone has access to the
specifications, so theoretically any developer can create perfect
translators or use this file format in their product.

Microsoft has already released a beta version of the file translator
for Mac users:
http://www.microsoft...nverterBeta.xml
So far the beta isn't great, but since OpenXML is an open standard,
others have already jumped in and are offering their own translators:
- NeoOffice 2.1 (free and open source) includes good OpenXML
translators.

This free product will do a fair job:

- docx (free)

There is also a commercial converter:
- docXconverter ($20)

- There is a free widget version of docXconverter:

Are you sure about that?

While certification looked to be a sure thing, in a surprising turn of events, it was turned down.

I was having the same issue of opening Word 2007 files with Pages '08, which upset me because I do a lot of group work that requires me to exchange documents with multiple people.
I found that I couldn't open Word 2007 files with Pages '08 when I received them with MS Entourage as my mail client. When I opened via my web interface or with Mail, everything opened just fine... hopefully that helps some people.
Now I know that I can rid myself of MS Office for Mac 2004 and just use iWork '08, and I feel great about that.
