Do I have Directory Damage?!

None of the signs have showed up and I ran a Tech Tools Deluxe Directory scan and it checked out BUT I just realized clearing application caches are bad! I've been doing this on almost a weekly/bi-weekly basis from Onyx!
Did I just do something stupid and I screwed myself over O_O?
I'm really worried about Directory damage after reading about it through various sites and hearing about disk warrior.
Any thoughts...soothing/calming would be better /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Unless you are experiencing problems with your Mac, I doubt you have anything to worry about. The only cache you may ever need to deal with is your browsers. I have otherwise never heard of an application cache, nor can a fathom why applications would have a cache that would need to be deleted from your hard drive. I would imagine that any such cache would only exist while an application is running and even then only in RAM. Beyond that, I do not see how you are associating application caches to a hard drive directory, as the two are mutually exclusive.

I take care of my macbook with the utmost care and I always run maintenance software, btut now I'm second guessing myself.
However since you did say that there was no need to worry then I guess shouldn't fret.
Thanks.
I'll stop clearing app caches anymore OO
I don't want to buy Disk Warrior OO let alone RUN the thing

It is good to run routine maintenance on any computer, but it is also easy to get carried away with it. Many people here swear by Disk Warrior so there is no reason for you to be wary of the utility. Disk Warrior performs many of the same disk functions, perhaps more, as TechTool Pro. TechTool is a full system diagnostic, Disk Warrior is specifically for drive maintenance.

How can I prevent damage to my drive?
By never using it. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Hard drives are delicate mechanical devices and sooner or later they will fail. Hard drives are also a mature technology, so failures do not occur too often unless a drive is old; either way it is going to happen whenever it is going to happen. If you are worried about losing data then you should backup your computer as well as running routine maintenance.

A lot of applications use caches (check out ~/Library/Caches/). While clearing them is mostly voodoo (doesn't really help most stuff), I haven't heard how deleting them is harmful (unless you're deleting a cache that a currently running application is actively working with).
I don't think there's anything to worry about when it comes to caches. As for directory damage, Journaling (turned on by default nowadays) goes a long way to preventing damage.

Well d00d, I've actually been running Onyx and I did clear caches of certain apps that were running such as quicksilver and safari, but they quite during the process so I'm not sure if there will be damage.
YAY no directory damage for me!
I ran an FSCK and nothing came up and it said "volume appears to be OK" and what not so I guess that won't be an issue.
Thank you all! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif You've been very helpful!
