I read on LoopRumors.com that on or about 9/05 ringtones will be available using iTones or even a ringtone service similar to most carrier's offerings. I'm really excited and suprised that nothing has been written on this.
I posted a question about it on Apple.com discussion group only to have it pulled by Apple the next day because it is a rumor at this point.
Anyone reading any details about this?

The reason you haven't read much about it is because it's just a rumor. Come Tuesday, we'll know for sure, one way or the other.

iTunes 7.4 has ringtones, but I do not yet know how to make iTunes realize one of my tunes (very short) is a ring tone. How do we designate an mp3 as a ring tone?

You can't. You can only use certain purchased iTunes songs.

Sorry for the dunb question, but are there any cell hpne ringtones avaialbe that sound like a cellphone?? the iphone tones that comew with the phone are not my cup oftea. I was so use to my Razor's"classic"ring that I actually miss it. I'm not really interested in having R. Kelly or Madonna alert me (or others) that my phone is ringing.
Please advise.
Thanks.

Ahh... another like me. I want a real ring. Not some music playing when a phone comes in. Before my iPhone, I had a RAZR. A month or two prior to the RAZR becoming available, I picked out this Motorola A630. The deciding factor for me was the ringtone. There were 4 phones I was interested in enough to choose from. When it came down to the choice, it was which one has a traditional ringer. The A630 fit the bill. 2 Months later, RAZR became available and I picked it up - after making sure it contained a traditional ring.
I will admit though, I like the Marimba, or whatever the standard ring for iPhone is. I use it.

Deciding on a phone based on the ring tones is well . . . How can I put it . . . As long as the thing rings who cares?

The rigntone thing SUCKS on iTunes. It's very hard to use and I tried to "create" one and I keep getting an error. Won't let me do it. Plus I had to manually add the icon in my iTunes bar. What a let down.
