Hi everyone,
New user with a quick question!
I have an Apple Macbook Core2Duo 1.83ghz, 2gb RAM, 60GB(5400) HD laptop (late 2006 model). I want to upgrade the Hard Drive to 200gb 7200. I have found this drive:
Seagate Momentus 7200.2 ST9200420ASG - hard drive - 200 GB - SATA-300
and
Seagate Momentus 7200.2 ST9200420AS - hard drive - 200 GB - SATA-300
Can anyone tell me if this will be compatible with the Macbook? All the Apple site says is that it has a Serial-ATA connection but does not say the type (150 or 300).
Has anyone tried to install this drive in their macbook ?
many thanks,
-Neil

I would be very surprised if the MB would not have SATA300 (but someone else should answer this)
But Was wondering if you Need the 7200?
it will speed things up but it will cost you battery life as well.
just wanted to point that out.

Pretty sure that the SATA is 150 in the MacBook and MacBook Pro. See this document for comfirmation.
In theory, SATAII (i.e. 300) is backward compatible with SATAI (150), but people have run into problems getting SATAII drives to work with SATAI controllers. This has been in 3.5" desktop drives typically, but I would assume that same might be true with 2.5" laptop drives.
If you want to upgrade your laptop drive, here is a 7200 SATA 150 200 gb Hitachi drive. Or you could do a 5400 rpm drive like these at 250 gb. I just upgraded my internal drive on my MBP to the 250 gb Western Digital drive.

from a google search it seems the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160GB model works ok. from http://www.seagate.c...tasheet/disc/ds[u]momentus7200_2.pdf it appears the new 200GB model has the same specs as the 160GB model except for the capacity and cache. thus i would expect the new 200GB model to work fine

Just finished replacing my 17" MBP's 100GB Seagate 7200.1 original drive with a new Seagate 7200.2 200GB unit from OWC. Using the tutorial from ifixit, it was actually a breeze. I didn't need to disconnect either the keyboard ribbon cable nor the hard drive cable from the logic board: there was room enough to swap out the drive, and the upper case just stood and leaned against the screen while I swapped the drive.

I used CCC to completely copy the original drive, which is now housed in a sleek OWC Mercury On-the-Go enclosure.

Hard drive prices are as good as they've ever been. The whole kit (drive and enclosure) was WELL UNDER $200 - even with expedited shipping and the cost of a new Torx T-6 screwdriver.

Clean off your work area, and keep removed screws in an orderly fashion, and give yourself an uninterrupted 30 minutes for the surgery.
