The computer I use was tunning 10.2.8 and I just upgraded to 10.4.1. Now I get "This file server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocol." whenever I try to open one of my Filemaker Pro databases. I have read that I am supposed to get the old computer to recognize the new one but I have no idea how to do this. Anyone able to point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.

Ok, I"m guessing that you actually upgraded to Mac OS 10.4.10 (not 10.4.1). There's a known issue with Mac OS 10.4.9 and greater not fully supporting AFP as it's included with Mac OS 8.x and Mac OS 9.x. In simpler terms: a Mac OS X 10.4.9 or greater computer cannot connect to a server (or computer with personal filesharing turned on) running Mac OS 8.x or Mac OS 9.x.
Your best bet is to backgrade to Mac OS 10.4.7, which will require a re-installion of your 10.4.x OS and then a combo update to 10.4.7.
Some people are saying that it's an issue with the Kerberos library and that if you use Pacifist to extract the Kerberos files from an older installer (like the 10.4.8 combo installer) and install them, it may restore your AFP connectivity. However, this is very much an unsupported hack and may render other things unstable.

Of course, the other issue might be that your Filemaker server is running Mac OS 8 (as your post title implies) and then you're running into the fact that all verison of Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.x) do not have support for AFP over AppleTalk, but only AFP over TCP/IP. I'm know for a fact that AFP over TCP/IP was introduced in Mac OS 9.x and is not supported in Mac OS 8....therefore it stands to reason that your Mac OS 8 Filemaker server does not have the networking protocol support to be compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.x.

The last OSX that shared via "Network" to our older computer (running OS8.6) was 10.3.9 (Panther).
To connect from Tiger you need to use Command-K and put in the address of the older machine - but you also need to have something like Shareway IP (which I use) installed on the older computer in OS8.6 (or9).
