AirPort Card and System Profiler

I have a mystery on my hands.
I can't seem to 'turn on' my AirPort Card.
System Profiler says "No information found." for AirPort Card
But it also provides this info under Locations:

Configuration Method:Automatic

I don't normally use a wireless connection, but as I was recently visiting a friend, I was curious as to why I wasn't seeing the usual icon regarding local wifi connections.
Anyone shine any light?
PowerBook G4, 1.67 GHz, 1.5 Gb RAM, OS 10.4.10
