Boot Camp has never required an erase and reinstall of the OS X partition, if that's what you're asking?

Sort of. If I don't have a Boot Camp partition to begin with I'll need to reinitialize my drive to create a new partition so that I can install Boot Camp for the first time, correct?

Not at all. The Boot Camp Assistant will create a new partition on the fly, without erasing any data.
