Used to be a windows user, mac fanatic for a number of years now. One problem I have been trying to address and cant find how to do it in the OS X or through other programs is create an archive file (zip or whichever) and be able to drag a file onto that archive to add the file to it.
This was easy on windows but is causing me a major headache on this OS.

You might look at Stuffit Deluxe.

As part of my back-up strategy, I have separated my "Archive" files from my "System/Work" files to "slim" the latter as much as possible. Then I copied everything (via SuperDuper) to a FW HD. Then I partitioned my internal HD. The partition for my "System/Work" files is 30GB (with 15 GB data, the rest "work space". Another partition is my "Archive".
After creating the partitions, I moved my "stuff" back to my new internal partions, as appropriate, with SuperDuper. Then I partitioned my external FW HDs with a bunch of 18GB partitions and one for the Archive (with extra space).
My "System/Work" partition is now cloned (or an existing clone updated) easily and quickly on a daily basis. On a weekly basis, I switch the two external HDs (one is kept at another physical location). The "Archive" (which also has my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on it) backup partition is only updated when I change or add something to it.
With this set-up, I can drag 'n drop a file from the first partition to the second any time on my internal.
I'm not really sure what you're trying to accomplish, because you could also "Create an Archive File" as a simple folder and drag stuff in and out too ;<)
