iPhone 1.1.2 update out in the wild

But, there's still no official Apple announcement about the update, right?
Personally, I think downloading an update from "the wild" that someone stumbled onto somehwere w/o an official Apple announcement and link isn't the brightest of ideas. What if this link is only meant for internal Apple use for test purposes?
Some have discovered the update via iTunes while others have not. Think I'll wait for that to happen.

It's not available in iTunes and not posted to Apple Support downloads. It is probably meant for the European users so they can restore their iPhone if needed and probably not meant for the US yet. Are those people that have seen in it iTunes here in the US using the US iTunes Store?

I couldn't agree more. Downloading a file from a source other than Apple and then giving the installer your password seems exactly like the Trojan Horses we've been reading about lately. It wouldn't be that hard for hackers to take over a rumor site's DNS and then use it to distribute a Trojan Horse. Take advantage of that percentage of Apple users' anxiousness to install updates immediately.
When the first real OS X malware outbreak happens, that's how it will happen.
As far as my iPhone is concerned, I won't install anything that doesn't come directly from iTunes, or at least Software Update. They could both be compromised, too, I suppose, but not as easily.

That's probably a good idea, Philip.
iTunes still reports my software is up to date at 1.1.1 but a few people on Apple's site seems to have snagged the new bits via iTunes. (The thought is that Apple is rolling it out slowly to avoid server slow downs (which happened last time), but not sure how they would do that.)
Apple posts firmware v1.1.2
The file in the wild is probably legit and from Apple, but again, how do you know for certain whether or not its for mass consumption? It could be strictly for European iPhones or an early beta.
I'll still wait.

Actually, Safari is doing what it's been instructed to do. If you don't want files self-expanding or automatically running, you need to turn that capability off in Safari's preferences. Uncheck "Open 'safe' files after downloading" in the General tab.
