My old bondi blue iMac died a year ago and my husband has an old G3. We have been using appleworks as our word processor. I have finally gotten a new iMac with the intel chip. I know that they have stopped using appleworks and at the risk of sounding stupid is iWork the replacement? Do I have to buy this? I just want a simple word processing program. I have Tiger 10.4 and have no plans right now to upgrade to Leopard. Thanks!

Yes, iWork is Apple's replacement for AppleWorks, but it's a suite of applications rather than one app that tries to do several things. And yes, you have to buy it, although you can try the 30-day demo that came with your Mac to see if you like it before buying.
But if all you need is a simple word processor, try TextEdit; it's simple, free and comes with your Mac. Even better is Bean, another free, elegant and open source word processor that offers plenty more features than TextEdit without bloating it with seldom used features that get most users' way. If you want a free, full office suite to replace AppleWorks, try NeoOffice.

If you are looking for something free. NeoOffice (http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php) works almost as well as Microsoft office, which has plenty of features. Text edit works just fine if all you need is the most basic of formating options for writing. Hope this helps.

iWork is well worth the money, if you're going to use the features. I'd say that Pages is well worth the price of the whole suite! If you're not in need of all of the features that Pages has to offer, try using AbiWord from http://www.abisource.com/
There are some other pieces of software listed above but I prefer AbiWord for a free MS Word replacement...
