Im having a mare with my airport not picking up the PPPoE host.
G4 Powerbook (not intel version), using 10.4.10, connecting to internet (broadband) using a D Link wireless router and an internal airport.
After working seamlessly for months, yesterday it asked me for my wireless network password (which I typed in, usually it just connects automatically), and I appeared to have a strong wireless signal but no pages would load.
I opened Internet Connect.app, where it said I was connected to my network but something about not being able to use the internet, I clicked the connect button and got Looking for PPPoE host, after about 1 minute of looking it tells me it cant find the PPPoE server. Tried this multiple times, tried turning the airport off and on, tried restarting, shutting down, repairing permissions, resetting my PRam.
I called my ISP tech support, went to Network Settings in System Prefs, went to the PPPoE tab in the airport area, they got me to re-type in my username and password for my ISP account (different to the wireless password), but this didnt work.
BUT when they got me to plug directly into the router with an ethernet cable, it worked instantly without asking for a password or anything. After getting me to test a few more settings, my ISP tech support said sorry its a Mac issue! They are right though as theres a PC in the house which is also connecting wirelessly, this is still working fine (I tested it to make sure, though it was not switched on at the time I was having issues) so its just my Mac being a pain in the ass. Not sure about my airport - I had a new one put in a year ago as the one that came with my mac just stopped picking up a signal. Dunno if it was replaced with the same generic kind or if its anything better or newer! I should mention this has never happened before. Yep, all username/password combinations are correct, and have been tested multiple times!
Does anyone have experience with this? Hopefully Ive provided enough info. Ive searched the forums and other people seem to have had this issue, but theirs are new connections/setups...mine has been fine for a while and nothing happened to it before it stopped working...I just woke it from sleep as usual and it didnt want to connect. Help!
Thanks,
Kaitlin

It sounds like the Mac is configured for PPPoE. When you said, " BUT when they got me to plug directly into the ROUTER with an ethernet cable, it worked instantly without asking for a password or anything." , did you actually mean you plugged directly into the MODEM?
With DSL, only the device connected DIRECTLY to the modem should be set to PPPoE. In your case, it is normally your router.
All computers then are connected to the router normally by using DHCP in each computer.

Err..yes...I plugged an ethernet cable into my mac and then into the hole (number 1) at the back of my D Link. Big thing with flashing lights. Sorry...I'm a designer, don't know the right words...ask me anything about Adobe Illustrator though, I'm a whizz in that department!! Hehehe

So what happens if you set your computer back to DHCP, can you connect through your D Link router?
As I said before, only the device connected DIRECTLY to a DSL modem should be set to PPPoE. When properly connected through the router, your computer wont even know that the router is set to PPPoE and therefore couldnt give you a PPPoE error message.

I went into my network preferences and unchecked the box 'Connect Using PPPoE'.
This seemed to do it!
I don't know if this box was checked before when it was working, and I really doubt that I would have checked it accidentally while I was trying to fix it (as I didn't know what PPPoE was!).
Strange.
Thanks for your help!

hey Martian
this is regarding a very old post of yours regarding pppoe connection using airport
well mine is a tricky issue
it involves pppoe and plus it involves a static ip also wht the scene is i will describe it to u
here we have 2 facilities on a single connection..my internet is connected through a pppoe connection + on tht there is a lan server which works on a static ip
now i have a netgear router with which i am connecting my mac leopard desktop as a wired connection then i have a windows desktop which is conencted using a wireless connection and then i have my nokia E90 communicator which is connected using a wireless connection.....also i dont have a DSL modem the network cable is directly plugged into the wall
NOW COMES THE PROBLEM
my isp tells me to put the static ip on the router with the subnet mask and the gateway and then tells me to setup a pppoe connection on my mac which i did in the network preferences nad i put in my username and password and the service name whcih was required now wht is happ is tht if i use this configuration of putting the static ip on the router and then try to connect using the pppoe connection on the mac it tells me pppoe server not found .....now when i bypass the router and when i connect the ethernet cable directly from the wall to the ethernet port on the computer with the same settings tht are already seton the mac the pppoe gets connected within a second however with the router in between it doesnt
whereas now on my windows xp pc the other desktop works using the same above configuration ie:- static ip on router and pppoe set on the computer
now if i go to the router homepage and if i set my router as pppoe there my net will get connected on the mac and on my cell also but then i am not able to use the lan server
have tried a lot of settings any settings tht come in ur mind Netgear router WGR614 v9
Please Help
