Hi,

I just had a question from a friend and had no idea of the answer.

They want to give their old flat imac to their son. It is the white version I think a G5 model, just before the intel move.

Can he connect his nintendo game cube to it? he has no TV to connect to.

if so how, what do they need to buy so he can have it for xmas

The best way to do this is to hook the GameCube up through one of several different DVR (Digital Video Recorder) devices that attach to the iMac through USB 2.0. Several, including those made by Elgato, feature the ability to work with game devices.

He'd plug the GameCube's composite video or S-Video output to the input of one of these devices, and he'd be able to see the GameCube video in a window on the Mac. He'd also have the added benefit of being able to watch TV on the Mac, if he wanted, or to digitize analog video, such as that from a VCR.

Just bear in mind that some DVR devices don't work with game systems, as they incorporate hardware-based video encoding. Those introduce lag into the video that will make playing games impossible. Just make sure the device has a game mode or switchable video encoding.

I am a little confused which one of the eyetv products would do the job, or would they all?

The best solution from Elgato at the moment is the EyeTV Hybrid, as it doesn't do on-board MPEG encoding.
