I do not know if it is the external itself or the upgrades that caused that a HD can mount as USB but not as Firewire anymore. I tried it on a iMac G5 and a Macbook both with OS 10.4.11. Last time, previous to the upgrades it worked fine with Firewire. By the way, I tried different cables with the same results.

Thank you. Probably not firmware but they probably know what to do. That's a good idea. One problem Smartdisk has been sold to another company. I'll find them.

I had a similar problem and unplugged my computer overnight (1/2 at least is recomended). It should reset your firewire if that is the problem.

I went to Smartdisk. There is no firmware for Mac above 10.4. that is needed. I contacted their support and I am waiting. In the mean time I remembered that my wife has a similar drive. I tried it and it connects as usual. So it is not the upgrade. In the last 3 months it is my second external HD sustaining a failure of some sort. Since 1984 I have had only one HD failure. It is amazing to see the odds of this occurring so fast one after another.
